The aging of the population and the resultant increase in the number of patients with low vision due to age-related macular degeneration and other ocular diseases necessitate an increase in awareness of the Charles Bonnet syndrome among ophthalmic care providers. ⋯ As Charles Bonnet syndrome becomes more prevalent as the population ages, all physicians who care for low vision or elderly patients should be aware of its clinical characteristics and treatment options. Understanding of this syndrome by caregivers will lead to decreased anxiety among the patients who experience it. Further exploration of treatment options will be necessary in the future.

ReviewCarotid artery surgery and carotid stenting in prevention of strokes.
To summarize the randomized trial data comparing carotid endarterectomy with carotid artery stenting and describe ischemic visual symptoms and their presentation to ophthalmologists. ⋯ Carotid endarterectomy remains the standard of care for extracranial carotid stenosis except in specific clinical scenarios. Ongoing and future trials will clarify the role of revascularization methods. The role of carotid artery stenting in acute stroke, including its use in the intracranial circulation, is being investigated. Ophthalmologists should be familiar with ischemic risk factor assessment, appropriate and timely referral for imaging and evaluation and initiation of antiplatelet therapy.

With both radiologists and ophthalmologists in mind, this article describes the best use of computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnosis of strabismus. ⋯ Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are safe tools in the evaluation of certain types of pediatric strabismus. The collaboration between imagers and ophthalmologists is essential in the development of feasible innovative methods of imaging that will advance diagnosis and monitoring in children with strabismus.

This paper reviews the literature generated on atypical contact lens-related infections and their relationship with particular contact lens solutions since 2005. ⋯ There have been epidemic increases in Acanthamoeba and fungal keratitis associated with particular contact lens solutions. Further study of these atypical species is necessary. Greater emphasis should be placed upon efficacy of contact lens solutions rather than ease of use.

ReviewCataract surgery and intraocular lens manufacturing in India.
Cataract surgery in India has seen exponential growth in the past decade. This leap was possible due to cost-effective cataract surgery with intraocular lenses. The purpose of this review is to update the reader regarding the Indian scenario of cataract surgery and intraocular lens manufacturing. ⋯ The burden of cataract blindness is a major challenge for all developing countries. India has managed to improve its cataract surgical rate by an amalgam of factors such as low surgical costs, low-cost indigenous eye-care consumables, infrastructure development and enhanced training. The findings from this review will be useful to develop strategies to enhance the uptake of cataract surgery in developing countries.
