Randomized Controlled TrialL-alanyl-glutamine pretreatment attenuates acute inflammatory response in children submitted to palatoplasty.
To evaluate the effects of L-alanyl-glutamine (L-Ala-Gln) pretreatment on oxidative stress, glycemic control and inflammatory response in children submitted to palatoplasty. ⋯ Pretreatment with L-Ala-Gln in children submitted to palatoplasty attenuates the inflammatory response in early post-operative period and promoted a better glycemic control.

Comparative StudyEnergy expenditure in critically ill surgical patients. Comparative analysis of predictive equation and indirect calorimetry.
The aim of this investigation was to compare the resting energy expenditure (REE) calculated by the Harris-Benedict equation (REE HB) with the REE measured by indirect calorimetry (REE IC) in critically ill surgical patients under mechanical ventilation. ⋯ These findings suggest that REE IC seems to be more appropriate than REE HB for accurate measurement of REE in critically ill surgical patients under mechanical ventilation.

Study on adhesion formation and the healing of colon anastomosis in rats with induced peritoneal sepsis.
To evaluate the effects of abdominal sepsis on adhesion formation and colon anastomosis healing in rats. ⋯ The peritoneal infection which was developed by cecal ligation and puncture raised the amount of intra-cavitary adhesions. There was a decrease in the amount of colonic anastomosis on the third post-operatory day with a following raise on the seventh without any effects on other healing parameters.

Comparison between actual and predicted postoperative stair-climbing test, walk test and spirometric values in patients undergoing lung resection.
To assess whether the tests - Forced Expiratory Volume at one second (FEV₁), 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and stair-climbing test (SCT) showed proportional changes after the resection of functioning lung. ⋯ In our group of patients, pulmonary resection led to loss of lung function measured by spirometry, but not to exercise capacity measured by stair-climbing and walk tests.

Pulmonary function and quality of life in patients with morbid obesity six months after bariatric surgery.
To investigate the body weight, pulmonary function and quality of life of twenty patients with morbid obesity six months after the Fobi-Capella operation. ⋯ There was a significant weight loss and an improvement of pulmonary function as seen by respiratory frequency, reduction and increased expiratory reserve volume and functional residual capacity. The quality of life of the patients also improved after the Fobi-Capella operation.
