Randomized Controlled TrialComparison study of two different patient-controlled anesthesia regiments after cardiac surgery.
Acute and severe pain is frequent in patients who undergo cardiothoracic surgery. Patient controlled analgesia (PCA) can be used to manage postoperative pain. ⋯ Pain control was effective and similar in both groups. Morphine PCA alone seems to be better for postoperative pain manage in cardiac surgery, due to its less morphine expense with the same effectiveness.

Randomized Controlled TrialTopical use of antifibrinolytic agent to reduce postoperative bleeding after coronary artery bypass surgery.
Antifibrinolytic agents reduce bleeding after cardiac surgery, but there are adverse effects after their systemic use. These effects are avoided by topical application of antifibrinolytic agents in pericardial cavity. We compared the effects of topically applied epsilon-aminocaproic acid (EACA) and placebo on postoperative bleeding and transfusion requirements after coronary artery bypass surgery. ⋯ Topical use of epsilon aminocaproic acid reduces postoperative bleeding in the first 24 hours and requirements of blood transfusion after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialPreoperative physiotherapy in prevention of pulmonary complications in pediatric cardiac surgery.
To evaluate the occurrence and risk of pulmonary complications in children who underwent pre-and postoperative physiotherapeutic intervention in cardiac surgeries, as well as to compare these patients to those who underwent only postoperative physiotherapeutic intervention. ⋯ Preoperative respiratory physiotherapy significantly reduced the risk of pulmonary complications in postoperative pediatric cardiac surgery.

to show the benefits of the use of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in the process of weaning from mechanical ventilation in the immediate postoperative period of heart surgery. ⋯ The use of NPPV for 30 minutes after extubation improved oxygenation in the immediate postoperative period of heart surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialCPAP at 10 cm H2O during cardiopulmonary bypass does not improve postoperative gas exchange.
To compare postoperative (PO) pulmonary gas exchange indexes in patients submitted to myocardial revascularization (MR) with or without the application of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). ⋯ CPAP at 10 cm H2O administered during CPB, although had lightly improved PaO2/FiO2 at 30 minutes post-CPB, had no significant sustained effect on postoperative pulmonary gas exchange. We concluded that in patients submitted to MR, application of 10 cmH2O CPAP does not improve postoperative pulmonary gas exchange.
