Review[Usage of Artificial Intelligence in the Combat against the COVID-19 Pandemic].
The COVID-19 pandemic is a global health emergency of historic dimension. In this situation, researchers worldwide wanted to help manage the pandemic by using artificial intelligence (AI). ⋯ The addressed aspects encompass AI algorithms for analysis of thoracic X-rays or CTs, prediction models for severity and outcome of the disease, AI applications in development of new drugs and vaccines as well as forecasting models for spread of the virus. The review shows, which approaches were pursued, and which were successful.

Review[Update on Intensive Care Unit Management of Stroke].
In this review, we provide an update on the intensive care unit (ICU) management of ischemic stroke. Over the last decade, new evidence has led to rapid changes in the early management of patients admitted with acute ischemic stroke. Nevertheless, stroke remains a leading cause of disability. ⋯ The main goal in the ICU management of stroke patients is to prevent secondary brain injury. To this end, a comprehensive approach to optimize systemic physiological homeostasis, control intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion, hemodynamic and respiratory parameters is needed. Here, we summarize recent advances in invasive and non-invasive neuro-monitoring, decision making in decompressive neurosurgery for large supratentorial or cerebellar infarction, specific cardiorespiratory management, nutrition, temperature management and mobilization strategies in ischemic stroke.

Review[Assessment of Patient-reported Outcomes in Routine Medical Care: Patient-reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-reported Experience Measures (PREMs)].
Information from patients about their own quality of life, experiences in care, and individual assessments of treatment processes and outcomes are becoming increasingly important. Patient-reported characteristics can refer to subjective information about their own health (Patient-Reported Outcome Measures [PROMs]) or to objective information about their experience during the treatment process (Patient-Reported Experience Measures [PREMs]). ⋯ Subsequently, ways to collect PROMs and PREMs are presented and in doing so, an insight into probabilistic testing theory (item response theory) and computer adaptive testing is given. Using national and international initiatives as examples, the implementation of PROMs and PREMs in health care systems is presented and future implementation strategies are discussed within an outlook.

Review[Anesthetic and Perioperative Management in Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA), Part 1: Anesthetic Procedures].
Carotid endarterectomy is a standard procedure in therapy and prevention of ischemic stroke in particular patients. To ensure an optimal anesthetic management, fundamental knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology and surgical technique is essential. General anesthesia may be considered as well as regional anesthesia in affected patients. This article reviews the cause of extracranial carotid artery stenosis, its surgical and anesthetic treatment as well as perioperative characteristics.

Review[Proper Perioperative Handling of Continuous Medication in Patients with Cardiac Comorbidities].
Cardiac comorbidities place a significant burden on the German population. Every third adult is diagnosed with arterial hypertension (AHT). In 2017 congestive heart failure (CHF) pertained approximately 2,5 million of mandatory health-insured patients. ⋯ Recommendations for the perioperative discontinuation or continuation of cardiac active drugs vary between countries and responsible medical societies. This article provides an in-depth review of the current medical therapies for cardiac conditions like AHT, CHF or CAD. The varying recommendations for the perioperative discontinuation/continuation of these therapies are also reviewed.
