Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffects of single-dose gabapentin on postoperative pain and morphine consumption after cardiac surgery.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the analgesic effect of single-dose preoperative gabapentin on postoperative pain and morphine consumption after cardiac surgery. ⋯ Oral GABA at a dose of 600 mg given before cardiac surgery significantly reduced postoperative morphine consumption and postoperative pain both at rest and with cough.

Multicenter Study Comparative StudyThe impact of immediate extubation in the operating room after cardiac surgery on intensive care and hospital lengths of stay.
To determine if lengths of stay in intensive care and the hospital are associated with extubation in the operating room at the conclusion of cardiac surgery. ⋯ Selection of patients for immediate extubation in the operating room by experienced clinicians was associated with shorter ICU and hospital stays. Immediate extubation rarely resulted in tracheal re-intubation.

Comparative StudyStroke volume variation as a predictor of fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing one-lung ventilation.
To investigate the ability of stroke volume variation (SVV) calculated by the Vigileo-FloTrac system (Edwards Lifescience, Irvine, CA) to predict fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing one-lung ventilation (OLV). ⋯ The authors found that SVV measured by the Vigileo-FloTrac system was able to predict fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing surgery with OLV with acceptable levels of sensitivity and specificity.

Comparative StudyThe incidence of intraoperative awareness in cardiac surgery fast-track treatment.
To determine the occurrence of intraoperative awareness with recall in cardiac surgery patients undergoing fast-track anesthetic management in a direct-admission postanesthetic care unit. ⋯ Therefore, the authors conclude that, with respect to intraoperative awareness, the "Leipzig Fast-Track Concept" with the use of ultra-short-acting opioids should be considered as a safe method of management of patients undergoing a wide variety of cardiac operations.
