Predictors of duration of unconsciousness in patients with coma after cardiac surgery.
To describe clinical and brain imaging characteristics of patients who recovered and did not recover consciousness from a coma after cardiac surgery and to investigate predictors of the duration of unconsciousness in those patients who ultimately recovered consciousness. ⋯ In patients who ultimately recovered consciousness after being in a coma for at least 24 hours after cardiac surgery and have no abnormality on a brain CT scan, elevated preoperative serum creatinine, urgent cardiac surgery, and lower postoperative hemoglobin were correlated with an increased duration of unconsciousness.

Review Meta AnalysisEndovascular stenting or carotid endarterectomy for treatment of carotid stenosis: a meta-analysis.
To compare carotid artery stenting with open carotid surgery for the treatment of symptomatic or asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis in terms of stroke, myocardial infarction, and death at 30 days. ⋯ Compared with stenting, carotid endarterectomy decreases the risk of stroke at 30 days, increases the risk of myocardial infarction, and does not affect the risk of death.

Clinical TrialPopulation pharmacokinetics of lidocaine administered during and after cardiac surgery.
The objective of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics of lidocaine in a 48-hour infusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). ⋯ A 2-compartment pharmacokinetic model best describes the plasma concentrations of a 48-hour lidocaine infusion in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with CPB. The inclusion of body weight as a covariate on clearance and central compartment improves the model. Lidocaine infusions should be dosed by body weight and decreased after 24 hours to avoid potential toxicity in long-term infusions.
