Comparative StudySystematic Error of Cardiac Output Measured by Bolus Thermodilution With a Pulmonary Artery Catheter Compared With That Measured by an Aortic Flow Probe in a Pig Model.
The precision of thermodilution cardiac output measurement using a pulmonary artery catheter can be divided into random and systematic errors. This study determined the systematic component. ⋯ Thermodilution does trend cardiac output reliably in most cases. However, the systematic error is large and has a significant effect on the percentage error as cardiac output increases. The precision error of ± 20% currently used for thermodilution measurement may be set too low and is dependent on the clinical setting.

Acute Kidney Injury and Renal Regional Oxygen Saturation During Aortic Arch Reconstruction in Infants.
Acute kidney injury is a serious postoperative complication following cardiac surgery. The aortic arch repair technique using antegrade selective cerebral perfusion has been used, but it is unclear whether subdiaphragmatic organs such as the kidneys are perfused adequately. The authors compared intraoperative renal regional oxygen saturation using near-infrared spectroscopy between infants with and without postoperative acute kidney injury after undergoing aortic arch reconstruction. ⋯ The intraoperative renal tissue oxygen saturation was not different between the groups with or without postoperative acute kidney injury in infants who underwent aortic arch repair using antegrade selective cerebral perfusion.

Effects of Catecholamines on Microcirculation During General Inhalation Anesthesia.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of clinical dosages of norepinephrine and dobutamine on sublingual microcirculation during general anesthesia with sevoflurane in minor surgical procedures. ⋯ During general anesthesia with sevoflurane, the infusion of clinical dosages of norepinephrine and dobutamine did not alter sublingual perfusion, although the expected systemic hemodynamic alterations were induced.

Use of a Lower Cut-Off Value for HbA1c To Predict Postoperative Renal Complication Risk in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.
There is an increasing interest in reexamining the relationship between glucose levels and postoperative complications. Threshold levels of HbA1c below those currently recommended may be additional indicators of risk for renal and cardiovascular dysfunction. In this study, the authors analyzed the perioperative outcomes of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operations to evaluate the association of HbA1c levels and renal complications. ⋯ The elevated levels of HbA1c are associated with increased renal complications and the cut-off values of HbA1c could be lowered to the upper range of normal limits.
