Preoperative and ICU Scoring Models for Predicting the In-Hospital Mortality of Patients With Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.
This study's objective was to compare several preoperative and intensive care unit (ICU) prognostic scoring systems for predicting the in-hospital mortality of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms (RAAAs). ⋯ Preoperative and ICU scores can predict the mortality of patients presenting with RAAA. In addition, the discriminatory ability of preoperative scores between survivors and nonsurvivors was larger than that for ICU scores.

Usefulness of Right Ventricular Longitudinal Shortening Fraction to Detect Right Ventricular Dysfunction in Acute Cor Pulmonale Related to COVID-19.
To compare two-dimensional-speckle tracking echocardiographic parameters (2D-STE) and classic echocardiographic parameters of right ventricular (RV) systolic function in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related acute respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) complicated or not by acute cor pulmonale (ACP). ⋯ Classic RV function parameters were not altered by ACP in patients with CARDS, contrary to 2D-STE parameters. RV-LSF seems to be a valuable parameter to detect early RV systolic dysfunction in CARDS patients with ACP.

Intraoperative Management of Adult Patients on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: an Expert Consensus Statement From the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists-Part I, Technical Aspects of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to support patients with refractory cardiopulmonary failure. Given ECMO's increased use in adults and the fact that many ECMO patients are cared for by anesthesiologists, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists ECMO working group created an expert consensus statement that is intended to help anesthesiologists manage adult ECMO patients who are cared for in the operating room. In the first part of this 2-part series, technical aspects of ECMO are discussed, and related expert consensus statements are provided.

Infective Endocarditis Is a Risk Factor for Heparin Resistance in Adult Cardiovascular Surgical Procedures: A Retrospective Study.
Heparin resistance (HR), defined as a decrease in heparin responsiveness, can result in adverse events with prolonged duration of surgery. Although some clinical risk factors have been suggested, the relationship with the surgical diagnosis is unclear. The aim of present study was to elucidate the clinical predictors of HR including the surgical diagnosis. ⋯ Infective endocarditis and preoperative hypoalbuminemia were associated independently with HR. The optimal anticoagulation strategy for patients with these risk factors requires further investigations based on the authors' findings.
