Transversus Thoracic Muscle Plane Block for Analgesia After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery.
The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of transversus thoracic muscle plane block (TTPB) as a novel technique for postoperative analgesia in pediatric cardiac surgery. ⋯ TTPB appeared to be an effective technique for postoperative analgesia in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery using a median sternotomy approach.

Observational StudyWeaning-Related Shock in Patients With ECMO: Incidence, Mortality, and Predisposing Factors.
Venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) commonly is used to manage refractory cardiogenic shock after cardiac surgery, with 31% to 76% of patients successfully weaned off their ECMO. However, it is associated with high mortality rates, and 20% to 65% of weaned patients do not survive to hospital discharge. This study aimed to assess the incidence of ECMO weaning-related shock, the risk factors, and prognosis in the intensive care unit (ICU). ⋯ ECMO weaning-related shock is frequent in patients with refractory cardiogenic shock after cardiac surgery. This is most commonly caused by sepsis and causes higher mortality rates, calling for further evaluation.

Evaluation of a Patient-Specific, Low-Cost, 3-Dimensional-Printed Transesophageal Echocardiography Human Heart Phantom.
Currently available 3-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing techniques allow for the creation of patient-specific models based on 3D medical imaging data. The authors hypothesized that a low-cost, patient-specific, cardiac computed tomography-based phantom, created using desktop 3D printing and casting, would have comparable image quality, accuracy, and usability to an existing commercially available echocardiographic phantom. ⋯ The study suggested that a 3D-printed TEE phantom is comparable with the commercially available one with good usability.

The Mitral Coaptation to Ventricular Septal Space: Two- and Three-Dimensional Transesophageal Echocardiographic Assessment.
To assess the dimensions and changes in the CSEPT (space between the ventricular septum and mitral coaptation point) before and after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and to compare patients with and without aortic valve stenosis (AS) undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ The CSEPT space is smaller after CPB and more so for patients with AS undergoing aortic valve replacement. Two-dimensional CEPT distances vary compared with 3D CSEPT distances. Additional study using Doppler analysis will elucidate the added value of 3D assessment of the CSEPT space.
