Impact of C-reactive Protein on Anticoagulation Monitoring in Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation.
To evaluate the impact of inflammation on anticoagulation monitoring for patients supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ⋯ Elevations in CRP are common during ECMO and can falsely prolong PTT measured by commonly used assays. The discrepancy due to CRP-interference is important clinically given narrow PTT targets and may contribute to hematological complications.

Observational StudyNonanemic Iron Deficiency in Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Observational Study.
Anemia and iron deficiency in patients having cardiac surgery increases their perioperative risk. Nonanemic iron deficiency (NAID) in this group is less well-described. We aimed to investigate the incidence and outcomes of patients with NAID undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ NAID is common and can lead to progression to anemia and increased transfusion. Iron replacement should be considered in patients with NAID in the preoperative setting. A prospective interventional trial is required to demonstrate the benefit of being iron replete.

Observational StudyImpact of Blood Sampling Methods on Blood Loss and Transfusion After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: An Observational Study.
The aims of this study were to assess the impact of the closed-loop sampling method on blood loss and the need for blood transfusion in pediatric patients following cardiac surgery. ⋯ The closed-loop sampling method can be efficient in decreasing blood loss during postoperative PICU follow-up for pediatric patients after cardiac surgeries. However, its application did not reduce the frequency or the volume of blood transfusion in these patients.
