Randomized Controlled TrialAnesthetics to Prevent Lung Injury in Cardiac Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
To investigate if sevoflurane based anesthesia is superior to propofol in preventing lung inflammation and preventing postoperative pulmonary complications. ⋯ Sevoflurane anesthesia during cardiac surgery did not consistently prevent lung inflammation or prevent postoperative pulmonary complications compared to propofol. There were significantly lower levels of 2 plasma biomarkers specific for lung injury and inflammation in the sevoflurane group.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of melatonin on cardiac biomarkers after coronary artery bypass graft surgery: A double-blind, randomized pilot study.
Melatonin has emerged as an anti-inflammatory agent, potent direct free-radical scavenger, and an indirect antioxidant in preventing ischemia-reperfusion injury. This study aimed to evaluate melatonin's effect on cardiac biomarkers after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ Melatonin reduced the postoperative level of CPK-MB and the length of hospitalization in the ICU in patients who underwent cardiac surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of Volatile Anesthesia Versus Total Intravenous Anesthesia on Postoperative Pulmonary Complications in Patients Undergoing Cardiac Surgery: A Randomized Clinical Trial.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of volatile anesthesia and propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) among patients undergoing cardiac surgery. ⋯ In adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, general anesthesia with a volatile anesthetic compared with propofol-based TIVA had not reduced pulmonary complications within the first 7 days after surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation, Combined With Prone Positioning, in Infants With Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome After Congenital Heart Surgery: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of high-frequency oscillatory ventilation, (HFOV) combined with prone positioning, on oxygenation and pulmonary ventilation in infants with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) after congenital heart surgery. ⋯ HFOV-PP significantly improved oxygenation in infants with ARDS after cardiac surgery and had no serious complications.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effects of Programmed Intermittent Paravertebral Bolus Infusion on Postoperative Analgesia in Patients Undergoing Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery: A Prospective, Randomized, Controlled Study.
To compare the effects of programmed intermittent bolus infusion (PIBI), continuous thoracic paravertebral infusion (CTPI), and continuous intravenous infusion (CII) on postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). ⋯ PIBI outperformed CTPI and CII in inducing analgesia for postoperative pain in patients undergoing VATS.
