To determine whether treatment with phyto-oestrogens or soya protein succeeds in lowering blood pressure. ⋯ There are no statistically significant or clinically important differences in blood pressure between patients treated with phyto-oestrogens and those not treated.

To describe the use of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) secondary prevention measures in the Spanish National Health System. ⋯ In the period 1994-2003 treatment rates in the secondary prevention of IHD have increased, although there is still much room for improvement.

Review Meta Analysis Comparative Study
[Metformin for type-2 diabetes mellitus. Systematic review and meta-analysis].
To evaluate the efficacy of metformin against placebo, diet, oral anti-diabetics, or insulin in type 2 diabetes mellitus. ⋯ In the long term metformin reduces the risks of clinical events associated with diabetes. There are no long term clinical trials which compare alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, meglitinides, and thiazolidinediones with metformin, in primary results. The different treatments compared with metformin did not obtain more benefit for the secondary results evaluated.

[Effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of pain from osteoarthritis of the knee].
To determine the effectiveness of acupuncture in controlling pain from arthritis of the knee. ⋯ There is currently insufficient evidence to recommend acupuncture as a treatment for pain from osteoarthritis of the knee. Additional, better designed studies are needed to determine the actual role of acupuncture in this disease.

To describe the overall characteristics of prospective studies on vaccines in children, performed by Spanish investigators and published between 1990 and 1998. ⋯ This study shows that most of the studies are conducted by clinicians, with vaccines targetted to newborns and infants, with no external financial support, in a small number of autonomous communities, and usually published in Spanish Journals. The submission of this type of studies to a research ethics committee is desirable, something done to a lesser extent than obtaining informed consent.
