Coenzyme Q10 and oxidative stress, the association with peripheral sensory neuropathy and cardiovascular disease in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Our study aimed to explore associations between metabolic control, oxidative stress and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) in relation to diabetes complications in a representative population of type 2 diabetes. ⋯ Hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and inflammation were associated with oxidative stress, which was correlated to the prevalence of diabetes complications. CoQ10 was increased in response to oxidative stress. There were gender differences in the risk factors associated with diabetes complications.

Observational StudyPrevalence, risk factors and sequelae of Staphylococcus aureus carriage in diabetes: the Fremantle Diabetes Study Phase II.
To determine the prevalence and associates of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) carriage in community-based diabetes, and their relationship to hospitalization with S. aureus infection. ⋯ S. aureus and MRSA carriage in our patients was consistent with previous general population studies. There were no diabetes-specific risk factors. Persistent colonization may underlie the increased risk of hospitalization with S. aureus.

Adverse event notifications implicating metformin with lactic acidosis in Australia.
To summarise the reported lactic acidosis cases associated with metformin from the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and estimate the incidence of metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) in Australia. ⋯ Pre-existing clinical conditions, such as renal impairment, and acute illnesses associated with lactic acidosis were frequently reported in the cases of MALA. The estimated incidence of MALA was lower than in most previous studies in other countries, probably due to the nature of spontaneous reports to the TGA.
