Review Case ReportsPathology Consultation on Viscoelastic Studies of Coagulopathic Obstetrical Patients.
In obstetrics, the decision to transfuse blood components has historically been driven by traditional laboratory testing in combination with direct observation of bleeding. The adjunctive use of viscoelastic testing, including thromboelastometry and thromboelastography, has gained increasing acceptance in the clinical domain. ⋯ Additional research is needed to further focus the optimum role of viscoelastic tests in major obstetrical hemorrhage.

To provide a clinical laboratory perspective on the Verifying Accurate Leading-edge IVCT Development Act (VALID) discussion draft. This potential legislative effort, if enacted, would overhaul the regulatory oversight of in vitro diagnostics (IVDs) in the United States and create a single system for regulation of conventional IVDs and laboratory-developed tests (LDTs). ⋯ It is imperative that a clinical laboratory perspective on LDTs is understood and incorporated prior to advancement of future legislative proposals.

At the onset of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic in the United States, testing was limited to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-developed reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay. The urgent and massive demand for testing prompted swift development of assays to detect SARS-CoV-2. The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of these newly developed tests. ⋯ Overall performance in this SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection challenge was excellent, providing confidence in the results of these new molecular tests and assurance for the clinical and public health decisions based on these test results.

Expression and Prognostic Value of IFIT1 and IFITM3 in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Interferon-induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 1 (IFIT1) and interferon-induced transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3) are commonly induced by type I interferon. The study aims to investigate the expression and clinical significance of IFIT1 and IFITM3 in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). ⋯ IFIT1 and IFITM3 were overexpressed in HNSCC and indicated poor prognoses for patients with HNSCC. IFIT1 and IFITM3 expression was correlated with several immune checkpoint molecules and tumor-associated macrophage markers.
