CALR, JAK2, and MPL mutation profiles in patients with four different subtypes of myeloproliferative neoplasms: primary myelofibrosis, essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, and myeloproliferative neoplasm, unclassifiable.
We investigated mutation profiles of CALR, JAK2, and MPL in 199 Korean patients with myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). ⋯ The prognostic significance of CALR mutations likely differs among the MPN subtypes.

Impact of an educational intervention on the frequency of daily blood test orders for hospitalized patients.
During hospitalizations, blood is drawn for diagnostic laboratory tests to help guide patient care. Often, blood tests continue to be ordered even in the face of clinical and laboratory stability. Blood draws are painful and costly, and they may be associated with anemia. We hypothesized that provider education could reduce the frequency of daily blood tests ordered for hospitalized patients. ⋯ Provider education and reminders can reduce the frequency of daily blood tests ordered by providers for hospitalized patients. This can decrease health care costs and may reduce the risk of complications such as anemia.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialPoint-of-care prothrombin time measurement for professional and patient self-testing use. A multicenter clinical experience. Oral Anticoagulation Monitoring Study Group.
We enrolled 386 subjects in a multicenter study of a point-of-care (POC) prothrombin time (PT) testing device. POC tests were performed by health care professionals using venous and finger-stick specimens and by patients using finger-stick specimens. Venous blood also was analyzed in the local hospital laboratory and a national reference laboratory. ⋯ Patients overwhelmingly reported satisfaction with the self-test, including the finger stick and device operation. The INR from the POC device is clinically equivalent to the laboratory INR for assessment of anticoagulation status and management decisions in professional and self-testing environments. Patients can learn to perform accurate PT testing, and POC PT testing is feasible in patients' homes.

Massive Transfusion Protocol: Communication Ordering Practice Survey (MTP COPS).
We sought to assess ordering practices and quality of communication during massive transfusion at US level I trauma centers. ⋯ Although CPOE-based MTP ordering is offered by nearly half of US level I trauma centers, verbal/telephone ordering is by far the preferred mechanism. Our survey identifies confusion surrounding blood component needs during MTP resuscitation as an opportunity for practice improvement.

Left-sided early-onset vs late-onset colorectal carcinoma: histologic, clinical, and molecular differences.
Carcinomas of the left colon represent a neoplasm of older patients (late onset), but epidemiologic evidence has been showing an increasing incidence in patients 50 years or younger (early onset). In this study, we investigate pathologic and molecular features of early- and late-onset carcinoma of the left colon. ⋯ Our results suggest that left-sided CRCs may present differential patterns of aberrant DNA methylation when they are separated by age.
