This study determined the influence of prematurity on the manifestation and treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). ⋯ Preterm infants were just as likely to be monitored for withdrawal as term infants, but their Finnegan scores were lower and fewer preterm infants were treated for NAS. Whether this indicates decreased NAS severity or physiological immaturity is uncertain. Other means of evaluating NAS in preterm infants are warranted, especially long-term outcomes.

Reduced primary care respiratory infection visits following pregnancy and infancy vitamin D supplementation: a randomised controlled trial.
To determine whether vitamin D supplementation reduces primary care visits for acute respiratory infection (ARI). ⋯ Vitamin D3 supplementation during pregnancy and infancy reduces primary care visits for ARI during early childhood.

To compare the effectiveness of an in-line EtCO2 detector (DET) and a quantitative EtCO2 detector (CAP), both attached to a t-piece resuscitator, during PPV via a face mask. ⋯ There was no adverse effect with the addition of EtCO2 detectors. Trainees favoured methods of EtCO2 monitoring during ventilation. The NeoStat device was the preferred device by the majority. The greatest efficacy was achieved with the capnography device. Capnography may enhance face mask ventilation.

Cardiac biomarkers indicate a need for sensitive cardiac imaging among long-term childhood cancer survivors exposed to anthracyclines.
The role that plasma N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and cardiac troponins T (cTnT) and I (cTnI) play in supplementing imaging to screen for cardiac late effects remains controversial and the impact of high-sensitivity cTnT and troponin-specific autoantibodies (cTnAAbs) remains unexplored. We studied the role of cardiac biomarkers as indicators of the late effects of anthracyclines among childhood cancer survivors. ⋯ Elevated plasma NT-proBNP or cTnAAbs indicated that childhood cancer survivors benefitted from being evaluated with modern imaging, despite normal function in conventional echocardiography. However, troponins did not seem to provide additional information on the late cardiotoxicity of anthracyclines.
