Multicenter Study
Do parents understand the medical information provided in paediatric emergency departments? A prospective multicenter study.
We evaluated the extent to which parents understood the medical information about hospitalization of their child in an emergency department and looked for characteristics likely to increase the risk of poor comprehension. ⋯ This study shows that improvements are required in the clarity of the information delivered to the parents. The assistance of nurses and optimal pain management may help to improve communication.

Hypothermia for neonatal encephalopathy: Nationwide Survey of Clinical Practice in Japan as of August 2010.
Therapeutic hypothermia is now recommended as a standard of care for neonatal encephalopathy. Although adherence to standard cooling protocols used in the phase-III trials is essential, empiric approaches have prevailed in Japan. ⋯ Only 43.8% of the units provided therapeutic hypothermia. Even in centres where hypothermia was offered, adherence to the standard protocols was extremely poor. To secure the safety and efficacy, further promotion of the standard cooling protocols is required; an efficient cooling centre network has to be established by optimizing the work forth distribution and transportation system.

Effectiveness of multifunction paediatric short-stay units: a French multicentre study.
To describe the characteristics of the activities of multifunction paediatric 'short-stay units' (SSU) including observation unit (OU), medical assessment and planning unit (MAPU) and holding unit (HU), to evaluate their effectiveness and to explore predictors of inappropriate admissions for OU patients. ⋯ By providing extended and easily available facilities for diagnostics and early treatment for a wide range of sick children, the French paediatric SSU is an effective model for 'observation medicine' in emergency department-managed units. The experience and principles may be applicable to similar units in other health care systems.

Hypotonic versus isotonic maintenance fluids in critically ill children: a multicenter prospective randomized study.
Study the influence of hypotonic (HT) and isotonic (IT) maintenance fluids in the incidence of dysnatraemias in critically ill children. ⋯ Hypotonic maintenance fluids increase the incidence of hyponatraemia because they decrease blood sodium levels in normonatraemic patients. IT maintenance fluids do not increase the incidence of dysnatraemias and should be considered as the standard maintenance fluids.

Infantile colic, prolonged crying and maternal postnatal depression.
To study if infant crying is associated with maternal postnatal depression. ⋯ Both infantile colic and prolonged crying were associated with high maternal depression scores. Most noteworthy, infantile colic at 2 months of age was associated with high maternal depression scores 4 months later.
