Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCompressive cryotherapy versus ice-a prospective, randomized study on postoperative pain in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair or subacromial decompression.
The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of compressive cryotherapy (CC) vs. ice on postoperative pain in patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff repair or subacromial decompression. A commercial device was used for postoperative CC. A standard ice wrap (IW) was used for postoperative cryotherapy alone. ⋯ There does not appear to be a significant benefit to use of CC over standard IW in patients undergoing shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff repair or subacromial decompression. Further study is needed to determine if CC devices are a cost-effective option for postoperative pain management in this population of patients.

Randomized Controlled TrialAdministration of analgesics after rotator cuff repair: a prospective clinical trial comparing glenohumeral, subacromial, and a combination of glenohumeral and subacromial injections.
Local analgesic injections are commonly used for pain relief after shoulder surgery. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of local injections administered in the glenohumeral joint, the subacromial space, or both locations after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. ⋯ Injection of local analgesics after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair relieves postoperative pain regardless of the injection location.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyWhich method is more effective in treatment of calcific tendinitis in the shoulder? Prospective randomized comparison between ultrasound-guided needling and extracorporeal shock wave therapy.
Ultrasound (US)-guided needling with subacromial corticosteroid injection is more effective than extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) for function restoration and pain relief in patients with calcific tendinitis of the shoulder. ⋯ Both treatment modalities for calcific tendinitis improved clinical outcomes and eliminated calcium deposits. US-guided needling treatment, however, was more effective in function restoration and pain relief in the short term.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyReverse shoulder arthroplasty versus hemiarthroplasty for acute proximal humeral fractures. A blinded, randomized, controlled, prospective study.
There is no consensus on what type of arthroplasty is best for the treatment of complex proximal humeral fractures in elderly patients. The purpose of this prospective study was to compare the outcomes of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) and hemiarthroplasty (HA). ⋯ RSA resulted in better pain and function and lower revision rate. Revision from HA to RSA does not appear to improve outcomes.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyImmobilization in external rotation combined with abduction reduces the risk of recurrence after primary anterior shoulder dislocation.
We aimed to compare the effectiveness of immobilization in abduction and external rotation vs immobilization in adduction and internal rotation after primary anterior dislocation of the shoulder. ⋯ Immobilization with the shoulder joint in abduction and external rotation is an effective method to reduce the risk of recurrence after primary anterior shoulder dislocations and should be preferred to the traditional method of immobilization in adduction and internal rotation in clinical practice.
