To assess overall reliability and validity of a neck-specific questionnaire, the Profile Fitness Mapping neck questionnaire (ProFitMap-neck), on three chronic neck pain groups. ⋯ The results indicate that the ProFitMap-neck is valid for measuring symptoms and functional limitations in people with chronic neck pain. The combination of a composite total score of symptoms and function as well as separate scores of each domain makes ProFitMap-neck suitable for research as well as in clinical practice.

This study examines long-term neuropsychological and psychosocial outcomes of survivors of malignant middle cerebral artery infarction treated via decompressive hemicraniectomy. ⋯ • Malignant middle cerebral artery infarction is a life threatening condition.• The neurosurgical procedure, “decompressive hemicraniectomy” has been shown to be life-saving among patients with this condition.• There is little known about the long-term neuropsychological and psychosocial outcomes following decompressive hemicraniectomy for malignant middle cerebral artery infarction.• This study concludes that neuropsychological impairments are highly probable post-surgery. However, preserved abilities and social support may serve a protective function against depression and an unacceptably poor quality of life.]

To examine how men present themselves as patients with chronic pain and how the men's subjective experience of pain interplay with dominant norms of masculinity. ⋯ Men's stories of chronic muscle pain display a subtle balance between following dominant norms of masculinity, such as being rational and in self-control, and a need to express vulnerability as human beings. We argue that health care professionals should be sensitive to the dynamics of subjectivities and cultural norms of gender within patients' illness stories.

Stressors in acute whiplash associated disorders (WAD), as reported on a daily basis, have hitherto been neglected in research. The primary aim of this study was to describe the most stressful daily situation or event reported by individuals with acute WAD within a month of a whiplash trauma. Another aim was to describe the meaning and significance of these daily stressors, i.e. primary appraisal. ⋯ The wide variety of stressors indicates that it is not only pain itself that influences daily life in acute WAD. Early identification of individual and situation-specific stressors gives new data regarding what bothers individuals suffering from WAD after a collision and may be helpful in understanding the coping process in relation to specific stressors and stressor appraisals.

There is potential value in developing a brief assessment tool for assessing recovery after musculoskeletal injuries. Our goal was to investigate the association between a one-item global self-assessment of recovery and commonly used measures of recovery status. ⋯ Our findings suggest that a single recovery question is a useful tool for conducting brief global assessments of recovery of musculoskeletal injuries.
