Communication between patients with chronic kidney disease and nurses about managing pain in the acute hospital setting.
The aim of this paper is to examine communication between patients with chronic kidney disease and nurses about managing pain in the acute hospital setting. ⋯ Specific analgesic and non-pharmacological guidelines for patients with chronic kidney disease should be developed and made available in practice to facilitate effective pain management. Change champions of renal units are needed to support nurses in dedicating specified time for communicating with patients about managing pain.

Maintaining the integrity of older patients in long-term institutions: relatives' perceptions.
To study relatives' views on how the integrity of older patients is maintained in long-term institutions in Finland. ⋯ Greater emphasis should be placed on the need for cooperation between older patients, their relatives and nursing staff, especially before admission to long-term care. Furthermore, increased efforts are needed in maintaining the integrity of older patients and in reducing ethically problematic situations.

A survey of Chinese nurses' current knowledge of pain in older people.
To investigate the current level of Chinese nurses' knowledge of pain and pain management in older people. ⋯ The findings in this survey highlight a significant pain management knowledge deficit among the nurses in the clinical practice. The findings may help the nurses realize their knowledge deficit in this area and may also suggest curriculum changes for the nurses to improve pain management knowledge.

Predictors of psychosocial adjustment in people with physical disease.
The purpose of this paper was to examine the demographic, medical and psychosocial variables that result in the deterioration of psychosocial adjustment in patients with physical disease, the meaning their illness has for them and their coping style. ⋯ The study indicated some predictors in the assessment of psychosocial adjustment and care of patients with physical illness. In daily clinical practice, among the patients with physical illness, those with a negative perception of their illness and those who define depression should be given special attention for psychosocial support.

(i) To identify barriers that could either prevent community nurses from prescribing altogether or reduce the number of times that a nurse might prescribe. (ii) To determine how wide spread the barriers identified above were. ⋯ There is a danger that the anticipated benefits to patient care resulting from the introduction of nurse prescribing may not materialize if the barriers identified in this study are not addressed.
