We translated the S-QoL into the Chinese (Taiwan) language and evaluated the score distributions of the translated S-QoL in terms of ceiling/floor effect, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity. To ensure conceptual and semantic equivalence of the S-QoL, the researchers performed both forward translation and back translation, consulted professionals, and completed a pilot trial on college students. Forty-one patients with schizophrenia were recruited. ⋯ The convergent validities were supported by satisfactory correlations among subscales measuring related constructs of the translated S-QoL and those of the SQLS-R4, WHOQoL-BREF, and RESE (r = 0.36-0.82, P < 0.05 to <0.01). Discriminant validity was demonstrated between groups with different numbers of episodes and hospitalization. The S-QoL Chinese (Taiwan) version was found to have good psychometrics and is suggested as a feasible choice of disease-specific measure for capturing HRQoL in patients with schizophrenia.

To introduce an application of area-under-the-curve (AUC) that can enrich interpretation of response analysis and illustrate this method on sleep quality scores in patients with fibromyalgia. ⋯ The application of an AUC analysis to response profiles for responders and non-responders can enrich the interpretation of sleep quality scores in patients with fibromyalgia. The method can be applied more generally to facilitate and enhance the interpretation of treatment differences on outcomes.

The aim of this study was to determine the socio-demographic, clinical and psychological factors influencing the quality of life (QOL) in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). ⋯ Psychological and social well-beings were more affected than physical well-being in out-patients with HIV infection in Kota Bharu, Malaysia. The study suggests that the patients with HIV infection should receive better psycho-education and psychological intervention.

Kids' Life and Times: using an Internet survey to measure children's health-related quality of life.
To examine the psychometric properties of an Internet version of a children and young person's quality of life measure originally designed as a paper questionnaire. ⋯ These results suggest that the factor structure and internal consistency reliability scores of the KIDSCREEN-27 embedded within an online survey are comparable to those reported in the literature for the paper version.

In quality-of-life (QL) research, the genetic susceptibility of negative and positive emotions is frequently ignored, taken for granted, or treated as noise. The objectives are to describe: (1) the major findings of studies addressing the heritable and environmental causes of variation in negative and positive emotional states and (2) the major biological pathways of and genetic variants involved in these emotional states. ⋯ Genetically informative studies may provide insights into a wide variety of complex questions that traditional QL studies cannot deliver. This insight in turn will help us to design more effective supportive programs that could moderate the outcomes of genetically based predispositions.
