Although tobacco use is associated with elevated morbidity and mortality, its use remains widespread among adults within the United States. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products are effective aids that improve rates of tobacco cessation. Many smokers interact with the medical system, such as during hospitalization, without their tobacco use addressed. Hospitalization is a teachable moment for patients to make health-related changes, including tobacco cessation. ⋯ Despite hospitalization being associated with NRT prescribing, most patients who use tobacco and are hospitalized are not prescribed NRT. Hospitalization is an underutilized opportunity for both hospitalists and primary care physicians to intervene on smoking cessation through education and prescription of tobacco cessation aids.

Meta Analysis
Effect of serum uric acid and gout on the incidence of colorectal cancer: A meta-analysis.
Pathogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC) depends on multiple factors. Identifying risk factors for CRC may facilitate the early prevention of the disease. We aimed to assess whether existing evidence suggests that serum uric acid (SUA) levels and gout are associated with CRC incidence. ⋯ Both SUA level and gout were associated with an increased risk of CRC. Maintaining low SUA levels may be beneficial in reducing the incidence of CRC. Further studies evaluating the precise mechanisms underlying this association are needed to establish whether SUA/gout causes CRC.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the main causes of death in hemodialysis patients, representing a public health challenge. We investigated the effect of different antihypertensive treatments on circulating levels of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) components in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis. ESRD patients were grouped following the prescribed antihypertensive drugs: ß-blocker, ß-blocker+ACEi and ß-blocker+AT1R blocker. ⋯ ACE activity was decreased only in the ß-blocker+ACEi group compared to the ß-blocker+AT1R, while ACE2 activity did not change according to the antihypertensive treatment. Both Ang II and Ang-(1-7) levels also did not change according to the antihypertensive treatment. We concluded that the treatment of ESRD patients on hemodialysis with different antihypertensive drugs do not alter the circulating levels of RAS components.
