Balloon kyphoplasty and percutaneous fixation of lumbar fractures in pediatric patients.
Type A fractures of the spine requiring operative stabilization are rare injuries in the pediatric population. Current reports have demonstrated the safety of the combination of balloon kyphoplasty and minimal invasive management of thoraco-lumbar fractures in adults. There is no information about the efficacy of this approach in managing pediatric vertebral fractures. ⋯ This study is the first one to present an excellent outcome of children with type A fractures treated with a combination of balloon kyphoplasty and percutaneous stabilization.

A case series of seven consecutive patients with L5-S1 spondyloptosis (SPP) and Meyerding IV spondylolisthesis (HGSPL) treated consecutively by a new surgical technique with partial reduction and fixation after spinal shortening. ⋯ This novel and efficient one-stage shortening technique offers the possibility to manage lumbosacral kyphosis and spinal local malalignment in L5-S1 SPP.

Low back pain (LBP) is common already in adolescence, and many risk indicators including both psychosocial and lifestyle factors have been recognized. Our purpose was to assess whether the co-occurrence of psychosocial (externalizing and internalizing) problems and lifestyle factors (leisure time physical activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep, smoking, and overweight/obesity) associate with LBP at 16 years cross-sectionally or with new LBP at 18-year follow-up. ⋯ Our results stress the role of psychosocial factors in reporting and seeking care for adolescent LBP.

Comparison between Oxford Cobbmeter and digital Cobbmeter for measurement of Cobb angle in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
The purpose of this study was to compare Cobb angle measurements performed using an Oxford Cobbmeter and digital Cobbmeter in a series of 20 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. ⋯ We conclude that the smart phone with integrated Tiltmeter and Cobbmeter application is an equivalent Cobb measurement tool to the Oxford Cobbmeter. The advantages of smart phone are the accuracy of determining the most inclined vertebrae and accordingly more precise Cobb angle measurement. The new smart phones with these integrated applications may be really helpful to the spine surgeons, especially in hospitals where PACS or Oxford Cobbmeter is not available.
