Are obesity and body fat distribution associated with low back pain in women? A population-based study of 1128 Spanish twins.
To investigate the relationship between different measures of obesity and chronic low back pain (LBP) using a within-pair twin case-control design that adjusts for genetics and early shared environment. ⋯ BMI, percent of fat mass and greater depositions of fat and mass around the hips are associated with increases in chronic LBP prevalence in women but these associations are small and appear to be confounded by the effects of genetics and early shared environment. Therefore, our results do not support a causal direct relationship between obesity and chronic LBP.

Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity Score (TILCS), facilitates the communication between physicians, and guides to treatment decision with better outcome. A composite injury severity score is calculated from these characteristics stratifying patients into operative and non-operative treatment. Aim of this study is to identify the effectiveness of TLICS scoring for thoracolumbar vertebral fractures without neurological deficits and the efficacy of conservative treatment in patients with TILCS 4. ⋯ The study's results demonstrate that conservative treatment for TLICS 4 thoracolumbar fractures can be safely applied. The conservative treatment of cases scoring TLICS 4 is equally effective to those scoring ≤3.

The goal of the current study is to establish a surgical algorithm to accompany the AOSpine thoracolumbar spine injury classification system. ⋯ The current algorithm uses a meaningful injury classification and worldwide surgeon input to determine the initial treatment recommendation for thoracolumbar injuries. This allows for a globally accepted surgical algorithm for the treatment of thoracolumbar trauma.

The aim of this study is to evaluate results of a standalone percutaneous posterior plating of the vertically unstable sacral fractures, to analyze the influencing factors, to discuss encountered complications, and to express the related recommendations. ⋯ Percutaneous 3.5-mm reconstruction plate is a good alternative to percutaneous iliosacral screws in vertically unstable sacral fractures; especially in the presence of contraindication to the latter. It is simple procedure with minimal incisions; short operative time; less radiological exposure; good mechanical stability; and less iatrogenic injuries.

The cross-sectional study evaluates the incidence, localization, treatment, and influencing factors of back pain (BP) in Germany's elite athletes. ⋯ At least every tenth athlete suffers temporarily from low BP at a level at which spine surgery could be the only option to relieve the pain. BP occurs independently of back-affecting training and additional stress. Further evaluation is needed to identify factors for avoiding severe BP in top athletes.
