The study is aimed to investigate the expression of PAX3 in bilateral paravertebral muscles in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and controls, and to further clarify its association with the paravertebral muscle volume and curve severity. ⋯ The PAX3 muscle expression and paravertebral muscle volume were asymmetric in AIS patients, and the expression ratio was positively related with the muscle volume ratio. These findings suggested PAX3 might have functional role in the development of AIS via regulating development of paravertebral muscle. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is reported as one of the symptoms of adult spinal deformity (ASD). Little is known about the mid- to long-term improvement in GERD symptoms after ASD surgery. Therefore, this retrospective study from prospectively collected database aimed to investigate GERD symptoms in patients for a minimum of 2 years after ASD corrective surgery. ⋯ Among ASD patients, 39% were diagnosed with GERD. In 69% of these patients, GERD symptoms improved within 6 months of corrective surgery and maintained up to 5 years postoperatively. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) after low- and no-energy trauma leads to an improved diagnosis and, as a result, to a change in the therapeutic strategy. ⋯ Considering the high percentage of our patient population with occult fractures, we recommend supplementing the basic diagnostic procedures with an MRI of the entire spinal column in patients with painful spinal column findings after minor trauma and for those with persistent pain without trauma. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

To elucidate whether specific spinopelvic morphologies affect the subsequent spinal sagittal alignments and determine the alignment patterns. ⋯ IAIPs are novel PI-relevant radiographic parameters reflecting the relationship between the pelvis and the spinal alignment. An anteverted pelvis requires more lumbar lordosis than pelvic incidence and aligns with low IAIPs, and a retroverted pelvis requires less lumbar lordosis than pelvic incidence and aligns with high IAIPs. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

To determine whether the annulus of lumbar intervertebral discs contains circumferential specialization in collagen nanostructure and assess whether this coincides with functional differences in macroscale material properties. ⋯ Specializations in collagen nanostructure exist between different circumferential regions of the annulus and coincide with significant differences in material properties. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.
