A two-staged posterior correction, using a temporary magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR), was employed to gradually and safely correct severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). The aim of the study is illustrating the results of this procedure. ⋯ Gradual traction with MCGR in severe AIS proved to be a safe method to achieve progressive curve correction before posterior final fusion, with no neurologic complications associated to more aggressive one-stage surgeries. In a staged approach, MCGR appears as an alternative to halo traction, avoiding frequent traction-related complications.

Because of its ability to superimpose imaging data on a patient, while anchoring the user's view to the immediate surroundings, augmented reality (AR) has the potential to dramatically improve the accuracy and reduce the time required for preoperative planning and performance of minimally invasive spine surgeries and procedures. Described and reported herein is the direct clinical application of AR navigation on a series of common percutaneous image-guided spine procedures. ⋯ This data set suggests that AR navigation, utilizing a VN, is an emerging, accurate, valuable additive method for surgical and procedural planning for percutaneous image-guided spinal procedures and has potential to be applied to a broad range of clinical and surgical applications.

To investigate airway development and airway resistance by computed tomographic three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the bronchial tree in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We evaluated factors predicting postoperative respiratory complications to provide timely treatment, prevent complications, and improve operative and anesthetic safety. ⋯ Pulmonary bronchial development in patients with AIS is affected by spinal-thoracic deformity. Comprehensive assessment of preoperative pulmonary function, especially airway resistance, is necessary in patients with AIS whether the thoracic scoliosis is severe or mild-to-moderate. Little is known about the reliability and value of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) undergoing scoliosis correction surgery. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of IONM and the cortical excitability in these patients. ⋯ Tc-MEP and SSEP monitoring is feasible, particularly when Tc-MEPs are recorded from the abductor hallucis muscle in patients with DMD. Similar TMS/CMAP and Tc-MEP/CMAP ratios show that there were no differences observed in cortical excitability between the groups. IONM seems a feasible and valuable neurophysiological tool to signal possible surgically induced damage to the spinal cord during scoliosis correction surgery in patients with DMD.
