The purpose of the current study was to explore radiographic predictors for recurrence of lumbar symptoms after prioritized cervical surgery in patients with tandem spinal stenosis (TSS). ⋯ Finding of the current study indicated that LSI > 10 was associated with recurrence of lumbar symptoms in TSS patients following cervical surgery.

This study aimed to compare the effect of needle puncture and chondroitinase ABC (ChABC) injection on inducing intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IVDD) in rabbits. ⋯ Both AF needle puncture and ChABC injection can successfully induce IVDD in rabbits. Compared with ChABC injection, AF needle puncture can induce more severe IVDD.

Lumbar fusion is widely used to treat degenerative and traumatic conditions of the spine, with various perioperative complications. This study compared lumbar fusion complications in patients with and without chronic hyperlipidemia. ⋯ Following lumbar fusion, patients with chronic hyperlipidemia have an increased risk of perioperative complications, including wound complications, surgical site infection, failed back surgery syndrome, hardware removal, myocardial infarction, renal failure, and urinary tract infection/incontinence.

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is accompanied by mechanical and gene expression changes to IVDs. SPARC-null mice display accelerated IVD degeneration, and treatment with (toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) inhibitor) TAK-242 decreases proinflammatory cytokines and pain. This study examined if chronic TAK-242 treatment impacts mechanical properties and gene expression associated with IVD degeneration in SPARC-null mice. ⋯ TAK-242 had limited impacts on SPARC-null mechanical properties and did not attenuate NZ mechanical changes associated with IVD degeneration. Expression analysis revealed an increase in ECM and inflammatory gene expression in SPARCnull mice with a reduction in inflammatory expression due to TAK-242 treatment. This study provides insight into the role of TLR4 in SPARC-null mediated IVD degeneration.

To evaluate the trends and patterns of cervical degenerative disc disease in the cervical spine in different age groups of symptomatic patients. ⋯ This study evaluated the severity and pattern of cervical disc degeneration at each level in different age groups. The severity and number of degenerated levels increased significantly with increased age. Adjacent-level degeneration is more common than skip lesions in patients with more than one-level degeneration.
