The 5-year postoperative failure rate of conventional shunt treatment for syringomyelia is 50%, with arachnoditis, shunt obstruction, and shunt malfunction being the most common causes. We report a new syringo-cisterna magna (SCM) shunt that allows syrinx cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage normally into the cerebellomedullary cisterns through the subarachnoid space. ⋯ We developed a new shunting system allowing syrinx CSF drainage to the posterior fossa, with symptomatic improvement, minimal complications, and syrinx decrease on follow-up MRI. The SCM shunt is effective for treating syringomyelia.

To evaluate the relationship between lifestyle behaviours, emotional health factors, and low back pain (LBP) resilience. ⋯ Findings from this study suggest that people who adopt optimal lifestyle behaviours and positive emotional factors are more likely to be resilient and maintain high levels of function despite suffering from LBP.

There is a high demand on spinal surgery in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but the results are sobering. Although detailed clinical and radiological diagnostics were carried out with great effort and expense, the biodynamic properties of the spine of PD patients have never been considered. We propose a noninvasive method to quantify the impairment of motion abilities in patients with PD. ⋯ The decision to operate on a PD patient's spine is far-reaching and requires careful consideration. Neurological and radiological scores did not correlate with the biodynamics of the spine. The resulting motion profile could be used as individual predictive factor to estimate whether patients are eligible for spinal surgery or alternative therapies.

Cervical rotational osteotomy for correction of axial deformity in a patient with ankylosing spondylitis.
Severe cervical axial deformity associated with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is rare in clinic, and there are little concerns about surgical treatment of axial deformity associated with AS. The case study aims to show the surgical technique to perform cervical rotational osteotomy. ⋯ Through this case, we hope to draw the attention to spinal axial deformity and provide a reference point in the surgical treatment of spinal axial deformity.

To understand the patient journey to Lumbar Spinal Fusion Surgery (LSFS) and patients' experiences of surgery. ⋯ Patient driven data enables insights to inform research regarding surgery/rehabilitation through depth of understanding of the patient journey. Awareness of factors important to patients is important; ensuring that patient-driven data informs research and patient care.
