This retrospective matched case-control study was conducted to compare two CT based surgery techniques for navigated screw placement in spinal surgery, whether a reduction of radiation exposure and surgery time could be achieved. ⋯ The results show that spinal navigation using an intraoperative CT with automatic registration compared to a preoperative CT and intraoperative manual surface registration, allows a significant reduction of radiation exposure, without prolonged surgery time. A significant benefit regarding cut-to-suture-time can be gained with surgeries of a larger scale.

Data quality is essential for all types of research, including health registers. However, data quality is rarely reported. We aimed to assess the accuracy of data in a national spine register (NORspine) and its agreement with corresponding data in electronic patient records (EPR). ⋯ Compared to electronic patient records, NORspine displayed weak agreement for perioperative complications, moderate agreement for ASA classification, strong agreement for perioperative details, and excellent agreement for height, weight, and smoking. NORspine underreported perioperative complications and comorbidities when compared to EPRs. Patient-recorded data were more accurate and should be preferred when available.

Anterior thoracolumbar (TL) surgical approaches provide more direct trajectories compared to posterior approaches. Proper patient selection is key in identifying populations that may benefit from anterior TL fusion. Here, we utilize predictive analytics to identify risk factors in anterior TL fusion in patients with trauma and deformity. ⋯ Patient-specific risk factors in anterior TL fusion surgery significantly influence complication rates. An understanding of relevant risk factors before surgery may facilitate preoperative patient selection and postoperative patient triage and risk categorization.

Retrospective National Database Study. ⋯ Quality improvement efforts should be aimed at reducing rates of infection related complications as this was the most common reason for short-term complications and unplanned readmission following surgery.

Two main surgical approaches are available for fusing the sacroiliac joint (SIJ): an open or minimally invasive (MIS) approach. The purpose of this study was to analyze the associated total hospital charges and postoperative complications of the MIS and open approach. ⋯ Our study suggests that there exist unique postoperative complications that arise after SIJ fusion specific to preoperative diagnosis and surgical approach.
