Low back pain (LBP) impairs the quality of life and rises healthcare costs. The association of spine degeneration and LBP with metabolic disorders have been reported, previously. However, metabolic processes related with spine degeneration remained unclear. We aimed to analyze whether serum thyroid hormones, parathormone, calcium, and vitamin D levels were associated with lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), Modic changes, and fatty infiltration in the paraspinal muscles. ⋯ Serum hormone, vitamin D, and calcium levels were associated with not only IVDD and Modic changes but also with fatty infiltration in the paraspinal muscles, mainly at upper lumbar levels in patients with symptomatic backache presenting to a tertiary care center. Complex inflammatory, metabolic, and mechanical factors present in the backstage of spine degeneration.

Is procalcitonin a reliable indicator of sepsis in spinal cord injury patients: an observational cohort study.
Prospective observational cohort study. ⋯ In SCI individuals, there was a correlation between serum PCT levels and septicaemia. Alongside this, PCT appeared to be more consistent throughout the study population when compared with CRP and WBC. However, this was a preliminary study and further research is required on a larger scale.

Adolescent idiopoathic scoliosis (AIS) is a progressive spinal deformity, most often observed in female patients of pubescent age. The deformity's severity, its progression through time, its treatment and subsequent follow-up are assessed with routine radiological evaluation of the patient's full spine. This study aimed to determine the cumulative radiation exposure in average patients with AIS treated by brace or surgery throughout their treatment. ⋯ The cumulative effective radiation doses rendered to AIS patients as part of their treatment and follow-up were relatively low. However, every exposure to ionising radiation for medical imaging purposes should be minimised.

The vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was introduced as a bone quality marker in the lumbar spine. Prior studies showed that it could be utilized as a predictor of osteoporotic fracture or complications after instrumented spine surgery. The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between VBQ scores and bone mineral density (BMD) measured by quantitative computer tomography (QCT) in the cervical spine. ⋯ Our results indicate that cervical VBQ scores may be insufficient in the estimation of BMDs, which might limit their clinical application. Additional studies are recommended to determine the utility of VBQ and QCT BMD to evaluate their potential use as bone status markers.

Low-virulent microorganisms identified on pedicle screws by sonication fluid culture (SFC) are an important cause of implant loosening. While sonication of explanted material improves the detection rate, the risk of contamination exists and no standardized diagnostic criteria for chronic low-grade spinal implant-related infection (CLGSII) are stablished. Besides, the role of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT) in CLGSII has not been adequately investigated. ⋯ Markers of systemic inflammation (serum protein level) and patient history should be employed to stratify preoperative risk of CLGSII and decide the best treatment strategy.
