Previous epidemiological and other studies have shown an association between diet and low back pain (LBP). This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between diet and LBP using a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. ⋯ This two-sample MR study found that frequency of alcohol intake was associated with an increased risk of LBP, and intake of processed meat, dried fruit, cereals, and tea was associated with a decreased risk of LBP. Moreover, no causal relationship was found with LBP in the other 13 diets.

The burden of scoliosis: a nationwide database study on demographics, incidence, and surgical rates.
Scoliosis is characterized as a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, affected by variety of factors, including biological, mechanical, hormonal, and genetics. ⋯ Our findings reveal a significant increase in the average incidence of scoliosis diagnosis, rising from 107 per 100,000 individuals in 2015 to 161 per 100,000 in 2022. Scoliosis now impacts an estimated 1.2% of children and adolescents in Turkey. The risk is 1.45 times higher in females than in males.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a spinal deformity that affects adolescents and poses a challenging public health problem. Compared to the general population, adolescents with AIS have a higher prevalence of hip dysplasia. However, the mechanisms underlying the impact of hip dysplasia on the coronal balance of the spine remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that the combination of AIS with hip dysplasia would exacerbate coronal imbalance. ⋯ The incidence of hip dysplasia is higher in the AIS population. In adolescents with combined AIS and hip dysplasia, pelvic obliquity is greater, potentially contributing to the increased prevalence of low back pain.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of the severity of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) on the incidence of arteriosclerosis in the carotid artery. ⋯ Patients with a larger cervical OPLL showed a higher frequency of intima-media thickening in the carotid artery.

Despite numerous observational studies, the causal relationship between obesity-measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC)-as well as type 2 diabetes (T2D), lifestyle habits, and susceptibility to low back pain (LBP) remains obscure. ⋯ Our findings indicate a potential causal link between obesity, smoking, and coffee intake in the genesis of LBP, suggesting that mitigating these factors could contribute to LBP prevention.
