The core outcome measures index (COMI) for the back is a questionnaire that evaluates five domains and has been translated into several languages and validated for different populations. We aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt and validate it in European Portuguese for use in patients with degenerative lumbar disease. Additionally, we aimed to establish the minimal clinically important change score (MCIC). ⋯ The cross-culturally adapted COMI questionnaire is a valid clinical assessment tool for European Portuguese-speaking patients with degenerative lumbar disease, with an MCIC of 2.1 points.

To compare the complication rates of two different types of posterior instrumentation in patients with MMC, namely, definitive fusion and fusionless surgery (growing rods). ⋯ Growing systems had more major operations in comparison with fusion surgery and early revision surgery led to higher numbers of major operations per patient; these differences were statistically significant. Definitive fusion at index surgery might be the better option in some MMC patients with a high-risk profile.

Abnormal leptin bioavailability has play key roles in the etiology of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Both leptin and its receptor levels may be modulated by the presence of genetic polymorphisms. This study aimed to evaluate the role of polymorphisms in the leptin (LEP) and its main receptor (LEPR) genes in the AIS susceptibility in girls. ⋯ The LEPR rs2767485 was associated with the genetic susceptibility of AIS and LEP rs2167270 with low BMI. These data can contribute to the identification of genetic biomarkers to improve the diagnosis and treatment.

This study aimed to find a standard of the vertebra kinematics during functional weight-bearing activities in degenerative lumbar scoliosis (DLS) patients. ⋯ The greatest coupled translation was observed at L5-S1 in patients with DLS. Coupled AP and ML translations at L5-S1 were higher than those in healthy participants. These data improved the understanding of DLS motion characteristics.

Changes in the cross-sectional area (CSA) and functional cross-sectional area (FCSA) of the lumbar multifidus (MF) and erector spinae muscles (ES) are factors that can contribute to low back pain. For the assessment of muscle CSA and composition there are various software and threshold methods used for tissue segmentation in quantitative analysis. However, there is currently no gold standard for software as well as muscle segmentation. This study aims to analyze the measurement error between different image processing software and different threshold methods for muscle segmentation. ⋯ The present study showed a high degree of reliability with very good agreement between the two software programs. However, study results based on different threshold methods should not be directly compared.
