The effects of corticosteroid treatment on non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients are unknown. To determine the impacts of adjuvant corticosteroid administrated to patients with non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia. ⋯ Corticosteroid might have a negative effect on lung injury recovery in non-severe COVID-19 pneumonia patients; however, the results of this study must be interpreted with caution because of confounding factors.

A novel atmospheric plasma device that uses indirect, non-thermal plasma generated from room air is being studied for its effects on wound disinfection in animal wounds of monogenic and polygenic murine models of type 2 diabetes. As a proof-of-concept report, the goal of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of the indirect non-thermal plasma (INTP) device in disinfecting polycarbonate filters established with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PAO1) biofilms as well as wound disinfection in diabetic murine wounds. Dorsal excisional wounds in BALB/c, polygenic TALLYHO, and monogenic db/db mice established with PAO1 infection all demonstrated a 3-log colony-forming unit (CFU) reduction when subjected to a course of 20-min INTP treatments. ⋯ Plasma safety was also analyzed via complete blood count and comprehensive metabolic panels, showing no deleterious systemic effects after 3 consecutive days of 20-min plasma applications. Therefore, the results obtained demonstrated the Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates were highly sensitive to INTP in vitro, CFU reduction of infectious Pseudomonas in wounds of diabetic mice after INTP treatment is far superior to that of non-treated infected wounds, and the application of INTP shows no indication of toxic effects. Our results are consistent with indirect non-thermal atmospheric plasma as a promising adjunct to disinfecting wounds.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a life-threatening respiratory illness caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Its clinical presentation can vary from the asymptomatic state to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multi-organ dysfunction. Due to our insufficient understanding of its pathophysiology and lack of effective treatment, the morbidity and mortality of severe COVID-19 patients are high. ⋯ Indeed, B-1a cells have been shown to ameliorate influenza virus infection, sepsis, and pneumonia, all of which are similar to COVID-19. The recent discovery of B-1a cells in humans further reinforces their potentially critical role in the immune response against SARS-CoV-2 and their anticipated translational applications against viral and microbial infections. Given that B-1a cells protect against ARDS via immunoglobulin production and the anti-COVID-19 effects of convalescent plasma treatment, we recommend that studies be conducted to further examine the role of B-1a cells in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and explore their therapeutic potential to treat COVID-19 patients.
