Effects of sleep-disordered breathing on cerebrovascular regulation: A population-based study.
Cerebrovascular regulation is impaired in patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea; however, it is unknown whether this impairment exists in individuals with less severe sleep-disordered breathing. ⋯ Hypercapnic vasodilation in the cerebral circulation is blunted in individuals with sleep-disordered breathing. This impairment is correlated with hypoxemia during sleep.

Airway obstruction due to bronchial vascular injury after sulfur mustard analog inhalation.
Sulfur mustard (SM) is a frequently used chemical warfare agent, even in modern history. SM inhalation causes significant respiratory tract injury, with early complications due to airway obstructive bronchial casts, akin to those seen after smoke inhalation and in single-ventricle physiology. This process with SM is poorly understood because animal models are unavailable. ⋯ After CEES inhalation, increased permeability from damaged bronchial vessels underlying damaged airway epithelium leads to the appearance of plasma proteins in both peribronchovascular regions and BALF. The subsequent formation of fibrin-rich casts within the airways then leads to airways obstruction, causing significant morbidity and mortality acutely after exposure.

Cardiovascular and inflammatory biomarkers to predict short- and long-term survival in community-acquired pneumonia: Results from the German Competence Network, CAPNETZ.
Several new biomarkers are related to mortality in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). ⋯ All new biomarkers were good predictors of short- and long-term all-cause mortality, superior to inflammatory markers, and at least comparable to CRB-65 score. MR-proADM showed the best performance. A combination of CRB-65 with MR-proADM might be the best predictor for mortality.
