Innovative statistical approaches: the use of neural networks reduces the sample size in the splenectomy-MCAO mouse model.
To compare the effectiveness of artificial neural network (ANN) and traditional statistical analysis on identical data sets within the splenectomy-middle carotid artery occlusion (MCAO) mouse model. ⋯ This study validated the neuroprotective impact of splenectomy in an MCAO model using ANN for data analysis with a reduced animal sample size, demonstrating the potential for leveraging advanced statistical methods to minimize sample sizes in experimental biomedical research.

ReviewToxicity of benzodiazepines in the treatment of insomnia disorders in older adults: a systematic literature review.
To review the literature data on the prevalence of benzodiazepines abuse and poisoning in older adults; the prevalence of polypharmacy with benzodiazepines in this demographic; and determine whether benzodiazepine anxiolytics or hypnotics were more frequently implicated in the cases of abuse and poisoning. ⋯ It is essential to increase awareness about adhering to prescribed pharmacological therapies to mitigate issues related to drug abuse and poisoning among older adults.

The effect of somatic mutations in mitochondrial DNA on the survival of patients with primary brain tumors.
To assess the presence of mitochondrial (mt) DNA somatic mutations, determine the relationship between clinicopathological characteristics and mutations, and assess the survival outcomes in Malay patients with primary brain tumors. ⋯ mtDNA mutations negatively affected the survival outcomes of Malaysian patients with primary brain tumors. However, studies with larger samples are needed to confirm the association between mutation burden and survival rates.
