Background and Objectives: Acromegaly is a rare disease associated with increased levels of growth hormones (GHs) that stimulates the hepatic production of insulin growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Increased secretion of both GH and IGF-1 activates pathways, such as Janus kinase 2/signal transducer and activator of transcription 5 (JAK2/STAT5), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), involved in the development of tumors. Materials and Methods: Given the disputed nature of the topic, we decided to study the prevalence of benign and malignant tumors in our cohort of acromegalic patients. ⋯ Malignant tumors were present only in women (14.70%) and the most frequent type was thyroid carcinoma. Conclusions: DM and obesity might be associated with tumoral proliferation in patients with acromegaly, and findings also present in the general population. In our study we did not find a direct link between acromegaly and tumoral proliferations.

A De Novo 8q22.2q22.3 Interstitial Microdeletion in a Girl with Developmental Delay and Congenital Defects.
Background and Objectives: Only nine patients with interstitial de novo 8q22.2q22.3 microdeletions have been reported to date. The objective of this report is to present clinical features of a new patient with an 8q22.2q22.3 microdeletion, to compare her phenotype to other previously reported patients, and to further expand the phenotype associated with this microdeletion. Materials and Methods: We describe an 8½-year-old girl with developmental delay, congenital hip dysplasia, a bilateral foot deformity, bilateral congenital radioulnar synostosis, a congenital heart defect, and minor facial anomalies. ⋯ Conclusions: Microdeletions in the 8q22.2q22.3 region are characterized by moderate to severe intellectual disability, seizures, distinct facial features and skeletal abnormalities. In addition to one already reported individual with an 8q22.2q22.3 microdeletion and unilateral radioulnar synostosis, this report of a child with bilateral radioulnar synostosis provides additional evidence, that radioulnar synostosis is not an incidental finding in individuals with an 8q22.2q22.3 microdeletion. Additional patients with similar microdeletions would be of a great importance for more accurate phenotypic description and further analysis of the genotypic-phenotypic relationship.

Background and Objectives: Diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) are a major component of air pollution and adversely affect respiratory and cardiovascular disease and diabetic foot ulcers if diabetic patients are exposed to them. There are currently no studies on treating diabetic wounds exposed to DEPs. So, the effect of a combination of probiotics and Korean red ginseng on a diabetic wound model exposed to DEPs was confirmed. ⋯ As a result of the molecular biology experiment, the expression of NF-κB p65 on day 7 was significantly higher in group 2 than in the normal control group. As a result of histological analysis, unlike the primary control group, it was confirmed that granule tissue was formed on the 14th day in the normal control group and group 2. Conclusions: The findings in this study suggest that combined treatment with PB and KRG can promote the healing of DEP-exposed diabetic wounds.

Effect of Combined Electromagnetic Field and Plantar Flexion Resistance Exercise on Wound Healing in Patients with Venous Leg Ulcers: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Background and Objectives: Venous ulcers are recognized to be more painful and resistant to therapy than ulcers of other etiologies. Various methods have been used for the conservative treatment of venous ulcers, such as pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) and plantar exercise, which promote wound healing due to a range of physiological effects. The study aimed to examine the effect of combined pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and plantar flexion resistance exercise (PRE) on patients with venous leg ulcers (VLUs). ⋯ Results: At the four-week follow-up, the two experimental groups revealed a considerable variation in ulcer surface area (USA) and ulcer volume (UV), with no significant change in the control group. At the 12-week follow-up, there were significant differences between the three groups, while group A underwent the most significant changes, with mean differences at [95% confidence interval] of (-4.75, -3.82, -0.98) for USA and (-12.63, -9.55, -2.45) for UV, respectively. Conclusions: On a short-term basis, adding a plantar resistance exercise to the PEMF had no appreciable short-term effects on ulcer healing; however, their combination had more pronounced medium-term effects.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate lifestyle, menopausal symptoms, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep disorders in post-menopausal women throughout the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the impact of menopause hormonal therapy (HT). Materials and Methods: Post-menopausal women were given the following questionnaires: socio-demographic characteristics; lifestyle; history of COVID-19; menopause-specific quality of life (MENQOL), the first part of which refers to the pre-pandemic period ("pre COVID-19") and the second refers to the current period ("during COVID-19"); Beck's depression inventory (BDI); the impact of event scale-revised (IES-R); and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI). Results: One hundred and twenty-six women completed all questionnaires, with a mean age of 55.5 ± 6.0 years. ⋯ Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic caused reduced physical activity, worsened food habits and weight gain in post-menopausal women. They also reported a high rate of severe-moderate PTSD and a negative influence on their romantic relationships. Menopausal HT seems to be a potential protective factor for sexual and physical status and for symptoms of depression.
