Background and Objectives: Even if they are cells of controversial origin (mesenchymal, perivascular, or fibroblastic), follicular dendritic cells (FDC) are present in all organs. The aim of this study was to establish the FDC expression pattern and its interrelation with HPV 18 expression in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Materials and Methods: Fifty-six cases of LSCC were evaluated by simple and double immunostaining. ⋯ A significant correlation was found between scores of CDM from the intratumoral area and those of the peritumoral area (p = 0.001), between CDM and non-dendritic morphology cells (NDM) of the intratumoral area (p = 0.001), and between HPV-18 status and peritumoral NDM cells (p = 0.044). Conclusions: The FDC and NDM cell score values of intratumoral and peritumoral areas may represent important parameters of LSCCs. This may contribute to a better stratification of laryngeal carcinoma cases and the individualized selection of clinical treatment protocols.

A new series of 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl thiazole pyrimidines has been synthesized and biologically evaluated for its in vitro anticancer activity. Compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h with substituted piperazine showed the best antiproliferative activity. In the NCI-60 cell line screening, compound 4b showed promising cytostatic activity against multiple cell lines. ⋯ Compounds 4a and 4h at 10 μM showed promising GI values of 40.87% and 46.14% against HCT-116 colorectal carcinoma and SK-BR-3 breast cancer cell lines, respectively. ADME-Tox prediction of compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h revealed their acceptable drug-likeness properties. In addition, compounds 4a, 4b, and 4h showed a high probability of targeting kinase receptors via Molinspiration and Swiss TargetPrediction.

Giant Echinococcosis of the Liver with Suppuration: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.
Purpose: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a common, complex parasitic disease that constitutes a major public health concern. CE demonstrates high endemicity in areas where dogs are used for herding or where animal husbandry practices involve close contact with livestock. It can clinically manifest with a variety of signs and symptoms, such as cholangitis, jaundice, pancreatitis, external biliary fistula, inferior vena cava obstruction, portal hypertension, and superinfection. ⋯ Methods: In this case, the diagnosis was based primarily on clinical presentation, computed tomography (CT) scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the patient's abdomen. The surgical procedure of choice was the partial retaining of the pericystic membrane and drainage of the cystic contents (partial pericystectomy). Results: The surgical management and meticulous long-term follow-up of our patient produced a positive outcome without any post-operative complications.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine how the status of the oral cavity, composition and properties of saliva change in oncological patients with and without Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) undergoing bisphosphonate therapy. Materials and Methods: A retrospective case-control study of 49 oncological patients using bisphosphonates (BPs) was conducted. The study population was divided into two groups-Group I consisted of 29 patients with MRONJ and Group II of 20 patients without MRONJ. ⋯ Particularly noteworthy are the statistically significant differences in the decreased level of Ca ions, the increased level of cortisol and the elements of saliva related to the immune response (lysozyme, sIgA, neopterin). Additionally, a higher cumulative dose of BPs may affect the susceptibility to the development of osteonecrosis of the jaws. Patients undergoing antiresorptive therapy should receive multidisciplinary medical care, including dental care.

In order to expand the donor pool and accessibility of the transplant procedure, it was necessary to introduce haplo-identical stem cell transplants in the Fundeni Clinical Institute from 2015. Even if the Romanian population is an ethnically compact white population, many of the patients referred for bone marrow transplant lack a suitable donor. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant from a haplo-identical donor is an alternative option for those patients without an HLA (Human Leucocyte Antigen)-matched donor (sibling or matched unrelated). ⋯ The patients we present were diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia) with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), MDS-RAEB 2 (myelodysplastic syndrome-refractory anemia with excess blasts 2), and SAA (severe aplastic anemia). In two of the three cases, the engraftment failure may have been due to the conditioning Fludarabine/Busulfan/Cyclophosphamide (Flu/Bu/CFA) used, combined with marrow grafts. In all three cases, the second transplant was of haplo-identical peripheral blood stem cells using Melphalan/Fludarabine (Mel/Flu) conditioning, the cells engrafted properly and the patients experienced complete chimerism, and two of them are alive with an excellent quality of life.
