Bacteria belonging to the genus Capnocytophaga are thin, capnophilic, Gram-negative bacilli with tapered ends that include nine species that are isolated from the mouth of humans and animals and, from a phylogenetical perspective, they belong to the family Flavobacteriaceae. Two more species, namely C. endodontalis and C. stomatis have been recovered from a periapical abscess and human and animal infections, respectively. Capnocytophaga spp. can cause serious and potentially life-threatening infections in humans, such as bacteremia and meningitis, most commonly in the context of penetrating trauma as a result of contact with animals, especially after animal bites. ⋯ Beta-lactams and aminoglycosides were the antimicrobials most commonly used. Surgery was performed in 20 patients (64.5%). Overall mortality reached 16.1%.

Background and Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a new index related to chronic liver disease, the alcoholic liver disease/nonalcoholic fatty liver disease index (ANI) at diagnosis, is associated with all-cause mortality during follow-up in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). Materials and Methods: In this study, we included 270 patients with AAV. ANI was calculated using the following equation: ANI = -58.5 + 0.637 (adjusted mean corpuscular volume) + 3.91 (adjusted aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase) - 0.406 (body mass index) + 6.35 (if male sex). ⋯ Patients with ANI at diagnosis ≥ -0.59 exhibited a significantly higher risk for all-cause mortality and a significantly lower cumulative patient survival rate than those without. In the multivariable Cox analysis, ANI at diagnosis ≥ -0.59, together with age at diagnosis, was independently associated with all-cause mortality. Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate the predictive potential of ANI at diagnosis for all-cause mortality during follow-up in AAV patients without significant chronic liver diseases.

Background and Objectives: Vaccination is one means of SARS-CoV-2 prevention and control. However, despite the effectiveness of vaccination, adverse reactions continue to require vigilance and monitoring. The researchers emphasize the possibility that some of the reported side effects may be psychological in origin. ⋯ It is recommended that women, more than men, should receive professional counseling from psychologists or psychotherapists. The public dissemination of positive messages about the benefits and safety of vaccines prior to a vaccination campaign may alleviate the tension or anxiety felt regarding potential adverse events. Healthcare specialists-both those who work directly with vaccines and those who do not-should maintain a positive psychological attitude towards vaccination, as this can increase patient satisfaction with the benefits of vaccines.

Background and Objectives: The aim of this research was to assess the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection; the study was motivated by parental hesitancy regarding child vaccination, and the potential passive immunity of infants acquired through breastfeeding from mothers vaccinated against COVID-19 or infected with SARS-CoV-2. Materials and Methods: We quantified the anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) titer in the serum of 743 children under 5 years old, hospitalized between 1 August 2022, and 15 September 2023. Results: Among the participants, 52.76% had an anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG titer that exceeded the reactivity threshold of the kit used, with an average of 1558.01 U/mL across the entire group. ⋯ Gender, admission diagnosis, and emergency department presentation were not variation factors of the IgG titer. Conclusions: The majority of children in the study group demonstrated IgG against SARS-CoV-2, and this rate increased with the child's age. Also, the IgG titer increased with the child's age.

Lumbar interbody fusion procedures have seen a significant evolution over the years, with various approaches being developed to address spinal pathologies and instability, including posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF), and lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF). LLIF, a pivotal technique in the field, initially emerged as extreme/direct lateral interbody fusion (XLIF/DLIF) before the development of oblique lumbar interbody fusion (OLIF). To ensure comprehensive circumferential stability, LLIF procedures are often combined with posterior stabilization (PS) using pedicle screws. ⋯ Ongoing research endeavors are dedicated to further enhancing LLIF procedures making them even safer and easier. Notably, the integration of robotic technology into SPS has emerged as a game-changer, simplifying surgical processes and positioning itself as a vital asset for the future of spinal fusion surgery. This literature review aims to provide a succinct summary of the evolutionary trajectory of lumbar interbody fusion techniques, with a specific emphasis on its recent advancements.
