ReviewThyroid Surgery in Children and Adolescents: A 10-year Retrospective Study at a Single Institution.
The aim of the study was to analyze clinical characteristics, surgical treatment, complications, and prognosis related to thyroid surgery in children and adolescents in a 10-year study at a single institution. Study Design. Retrospective study. ⋯ This study demonstrated that thyroid surgery in children and adolescents is a safe and efficient procedure in the hands of experienced surgeon for adult thyroid surgery. For children and adolescents with thyroid carcinoma, our method of choice is total thyroidectomy with occasionally paratracheal neck dissection, whereas lateral cervical lymph node dissection is only necessary in fine needle aspiration positive lymph nodes. Our results according to postoperative outcomes and complications are comparable to other recently published data.

Characteristics of Malignant Thyroid Tumors: A Retrospective Study on 320 Patients.
Papillary thyroid cancer accounts for 80-85% of diagnosed thyroid cancers, while follicular, medullary, and anaplastic cancers are diagnosed significantly less frequently. This study aimed to show the characteristics of malignant thyroid tumors. In this retrospective study, we analyzed data from 320 patients who underwent thyroid surgery from January 2018 to December 2019. ⋯ There was no significant difference between genders in tumor size, extrathyroidal and lymphovascular invasion, and multifocality. There were significantly more thyroid cancers with a lymphovascular invasion that were less than 2 cm in size (p=0.04). In our opinion, it is important to emphasize the value of early diagnostics and analysis of the malignant tumor characteristics that are major prognostic factors for survival in patients with thyroid cancer.

The most obvious indication for thyroid surgery is malignancy, but other indications are also not rare. As with any other surgical procedure, those surgeries also carry risks which can be classified as minor or major. ⋯ In recent years, thyroid surgery is becoming safer due to the development of new surgical, hemostatic, and other techniques such as intraoperative monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve and parathyroid gland detection.

Clinical TrialThe effect of atorvastatin on the common carotid artery intima-media thickness in patients with ischemic stroke.
Occlusion of the initial segment of internal carotid artery is the most common reason for vascular events in the brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of one-year treatment with atorvastatin on intima-media thickness (IMT) of carotid arteries as a measure of atherosclerosis in stroke patients. In this prospective interventional study, 44 patients with ischemic stroke were investigated. ⋯ The IMT of both right and left carotid arteries decreased after 6- and 12-month atorvastatin treatment. Based on the results of this study, long-term administration of atorvastatin was associated with reduction in carotid artery IMT in patients with ischemic stroke. Such a decrease in IMT may prevent subsequent stroke or cardiovascular events in these patients.

Defining health-related quality of life in localized and advanced stages of breast cancer - the first step towards hereditary cancer genetic counseling.
The important goal in breast cancer treatment is to improve patient quality of life. Due to the huge economic burden, it is necessary to estimate the health state utility values for different breast cancer stages accurately. A group of 114 women filled out the EuroQol-5D-3L questionnaire at two time points. ⋯ The EuroQol visual-analog score was mostly correlated with the anxiety/depression and pain/discomfort quality of life dimensions. Health state utility values for different breast cancer stages are a necessary tool to perform economic analyses in breast cancer management decision making, due to its huge economic burden. Special attention should be paid to assessment of the psychosocial aspects of the disease, as well as pain management.
