Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of the COX-inhibiting nitric oxide donator AZD3582 and rofecoxib in treating the signs and symptoms of Osteoarthritis of the knee.
To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of AZD3582 with that of rofecoxib, naproxen, and placebo in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, and to define the dosage of AZD3582 (125 mg, 375 mg, and 750 mg twice a day) that is noninferior in efficacy to rofecoxib. ⋯ AZD3582 375 mg and 750 mg twice a day were superior to placebo and as effective as rofecoxib 25 mg/day in treating the signs and symptoms of OA of the knee. AZD3582 125 mg twice a day was not statistically different from placebo.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyA disease-specific self-help program compared with a generalized chronic disease self-help program for arthritis patients.
Both the Arthritis Self-Management Program (ASMP) and the generic Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP) have been shown to be successful in improving conditions in patients with arthritis. This study compared the relative effectiveness of the 2 programs for individuals with arthritis. ⋯ The disease-specific ASMP should be considered first where there are sufficient resources and participants. However, both programs had positive effects, and the CDSMP should be considered a viable alternative.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyVery low-dose prednisolone in early rheumatoid arthritis retards radiographic progression over two years: a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
To assess the effect of 5 mg/day prednisolone on disease progression in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) receiving standardized disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy. ⋯ The very low daily dose of 5 mg prednisolone given over 2 years in combination with background DMARD therapy substantially decreased radiographic progression in early RA at low risk.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialExercise, self-efficacy, and mobility performance in overweight and obese older adults with knee osteoarthritis.
To examine changes in mobility-related self efficacy following exercise and dietary weight loss interventions in overweight and obese older adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA), and to determine if self efficacy and pain mediate the effects of the interventions on mobility task performance. ⋯ Exercise + dietary weight loss results in improved mobility-related self efficacy; changes in these task-specific control beliefs and self-reported pain serve as independent partial mediators of the beneficial effect of exercise + dietary weight loss on stair-climb performance.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialCluster randomized controlled trial of the impact of a computer-assisted learning package on the learning of musculoskeletal examination skills by undergraduate medical students.
To identify whether there was measurable impact of a specific computer-assisted learning (CAL) package, "Virtual Rheumatology," on the learning of musculoskeletal examination skills by medical students. ⋯ The Virtual Rheumatology CD has a positive impact on the acquisition of musculoskeletal examination skills in medical students. Further study is needed to see if similar advantages could be gained in other clinical specialities and how CAL resources could be effectively integrated into the medical curriculum.
