Multicenter StudyIntensive care unit nurses' information needs and recommendations for integrated displays to improve nurses' situation awareness.
Fatal errors can occur in intensive care units (ICUs). Researchers claim that information integration at the bedside may improve nurses' situation awareness (SA) of patients and decrease errors. However, it is unclear which information should be integrated and in what form. Our research uses the theory of SA to analyze the type of tasks, and their associated information gaps. We aimed to provide recommendations for integrated, consolidated information displays to improve nurses' SA. ⋯ Integrated information that enhances nurses' Situation Awareness may decrease errors and improve patient safety in the future.

Multicenter StudyThe financial impact of health information exchange on emergency department care.
To examine the financial impact health information exchange (HIE) in emergency departments (EDs). ⋯ Access to additional clinical data through HIE in emergency department settings is associated with net societal saving.

Multicenter StudyThe impact of electronic health records on care of heart failure patients in the emergency room.
To evaluate if electronic health records (EHR) have observable effects on care outcomes, we examined quality and efficiency measures for patients presenting to emergency departments (ED). ⋯ An EHR may have the potential to be a valuable adjunct in the care of heart failure patients.

Multicenter StudyEnrollment into a time sensitive clinical study in the critical care setting: results from computerized septic shock sniffer implementation.
Recruitment of patients into time sensitive clinical trials in intensive care units (ICU) poses a significant challenge. Enrollment is limited by delayed recognition and late notification of research personnel. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of electronic screening (septic shock sniffer) regarding enrollment into a time sensitive (24 h after onset) clinical study of echocardiography in severe sepsis and septic shock. ⋯ Automated electronic medical records screening improves the efficiency of enrollment and should be a routine tool for the recruitment of patients into time sensitive clinical trials in the ICU setting.

Multicenter StudyDevelopment and implementation of a clinician reporting system for advanced stage cancer: initial lessons learned.
Innovative approaches can strengthen patient-caregiver-clinician information exchange and more effectively address the physical and psychosocial challenges of advanced disease. This study reports initial findings from implementation of the Clinician Report (CR)-a patient and caregiver status report tool accessible by the oncology clinic team. ⋯ Though in its early implementation stages, the CR demonstrates the potential to positively impact care delivery in the cancer clinic setting, particularly by facilitating earlier interventions and improving patient-caregiver-clinician communication both during and between clinic visits.
