Randomized Controlled Trial
Effect of peritoneal lavage with clindamycin-gentamicin solution on infections after elective colorectal cancer surgery.
Colorectal surgery may lead to infections because despite meticulous aseptic measures, extravasation of microorganisms from the colon lumen is unavoidable. ⋯ Antibiotic lavage of the peritoneum is associated with a lower incidence of intra-abdominal abscesses and wound infections.

The effects of an amino acid supplement on glucose homeostasis, inflammatory markers, and incretins after laparoscopic gastric bypass.
Protein supplements are routinely used after a laparoscopic gastric bypass (LGB). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an amino acid supplement on glucose homeostasis and hormonal and inflammatory markers after LGB. ⋯ An amino acid supplement had no effect on the early postoperative incretins after LGB. It may have a negative influence on glucose kinetics and degree of inflammation. Future studies are needed to clarify these effects.

A moderated journal club is more effective than an Internet journal club in teaching critical appraisal skills: results of a multicenter randomized controlled trial.
Evidence Based Reviews in Surgery (EBRS) is an Internet journal club that is effective in teaching critical appraisal skills to practicing surgeons. The objective of this randomized controlled trial was to determine whether teaching critical appraisal skills to surgical residents through the Internet is as effective as a moderated in-person journal club. ⋯ A moderated journal club is considerably better in teaching critical appraisal skills to surgical residents. This is likely because of the low participation in the Internet journal club.

Prospective randomized trial of accelerated re-epithelization of skin graft donor sites using extracorporeal shock wave therapy.
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy may enhance revascularization and repair of healing soft tissue. ⋯ For centers that apply nonadherent gauze dressings and topical antiseptics to skin graft donor sites, application of a single defocused shock wave treatment immediately after skin graft harvest can significantly accelerate donor site epithelialization.

Online spaced education generates transfer and improves long-term retention of diagnostic skills: a randomized controlled trial.
Retention of learning from surgical training is often limited, especially if the knowledge and skills are used infrequently. Using histopathology diagnostic skills as an experimental system, we compared knowledge transfer and retention between bolus Web-based teaching (WBT) modules and online spaced education, a novel email-based method of online education founded on the spacing effect. ⋯ Online spaced education generates transfer of histopathology diagnostic skills and substantially improves their long-term retention. Additional research is needed to determine how spaced education can optimize learning, transfer, and retention of surgical skills.
