A prospective randomized controlled study of oral tranexamic acid for preventing postinflammatory hyperpigmentation after Q-switched ruby laser.
Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is the most common skin complication in Asians after invasive cosmetic treatments. ⋯ Although oral TA has been reported to have depigmentation effects, it may not be effective for preventing PIH after QSRL. Considering the dosage and duration of treatment, an optimal protocol may be needed to induce the efficacy of this treatment to achieve the PIH-preventing effect of oral TA.

Improvement in nasolabial folds with a hyaluronic acid filler using a cohesive polydensified matrix technology: results from an 18-month open-label extension trial.
Repeat treatments of nonpermanent dermal fillers are used in the long-term treatment of wrinkles and folds and to volumize. OBJECTIVE To determine the safety and effectiveness of a nonanimal-sourced hyaluronic acid (HA) (which uses a cohesive polydensified matrix (CPM) technology [CPMHA]) for the treatment of nasolabial folds (NLFs) during an 18-month open-label extension trial. ⋯ This CPMHA is a well-tolerated and effective treatment for at least 48 weeks in the majority of subjects for the correction of moderate to severe NLFs with repeat injections given over an 18-month period.

Equal cosmetic outcomes with 5-0 poliglecaprone-25 versus 6-0 polypropylene for superficial closures.
Cutaneous sutures should provide an aesthetically pleasing result. After placing subcutaneous sutures, enough absorbable suture often remains for the superficial closure. Mohs surgeons often use a nonabsorbable suture to close the superficial layer to obtain cosmetically elegant results, but using this additional suture is less cost effective than using the remaining absorbable suture. ⋯ In primary closures of facial defects, using 5-0 poliglecaprone-25 or 6-0 polypropylene for the superficial closure did not affect the cosmetic result. Therefore, 5-0 poliglecaprone-25 provides a comparable and cost-effective alternative to nonabsorbable sutures for epidermal approximation in layered closures.

Controlled, randomized study of pain levels in subjects treated with calcium hydroxylapatite premixed with lidocaine for correction of nasolabial folds.
Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) has been administered after nerve block injection of anesthetic agents. ⋯ Investigators concluded that CaHA premixed with lidocaine results in significant pain reduction during dermal filler injection while maintaining the aesthetic improvement of CaHA without lidocaine and demonstrating comparable local transient adverse events for treatment and control. BioForm Medical (San Mateo, CA) provided the soft tissue filler, lidocaine, and other necessary supplies used in this study. All authors are members of the Bioform Medical Education Faculty.

Randomized comparison of Mohs micrographic surgery and surgical excision for small nodular basal cell carcinoma: tissue-sparing outcome.
Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is recognized globally as the criterion standard for high-risk basal cell carcinoma (BCC). The main advantage of MMS over conventional surgery is the chance of complete tumor removal, but it is also thought, based on experience, to be tissue sparing. ⋯ This is the first randomized trial demonstrating that MMS is a tissue-sparing treatment.
