Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening uptake in many countries has been low and further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. General Practitioners (GPs) are key facilitators, however research on their impact on organised CRC screening is still limited. ⋯ Persons cared for by GPs who received a tailored talk with a cancer screening specialist avoided a drop in CRC screening adherence, which characterised all other Italian screening programmes during the COVID-19 emergency. If future randomised trials confirm the impact of tailored talks, they may be incorporated into existing strategies to improve population CRC screening uptake.

A general practitioner (GP) standardly provides contraceptive counselling and care in the Netherlands. Recent years have seen the rise of mobile health technologies that aim to prevent pregnancy based on fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs). We lack high-quality evidence of these methods' effectiveness and clarity on how healthcare professionals include them in contraceptive counselling. ⋯ To minimise risk of unintended pregnancy, professionals hesitated to include mHealth contraception or other FABMs in contraceptive consultations. This may hamper adequate patient-centred counselling for patients with preference for mHealth contraception.Based on these results, we proposed recommendations that foster a patient-tailored approach to mHealth contraceptives.

Pragmatic Clinical Trial
Effectiveness of the Assessment of Burden of Chronic Conditions (ABCC)-tool in patients with asthma, COPD, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and heart failure: A pragmatic clustered quasi-experimental study in the Netherlands.
The Assessment of Burden of Chronic Conditions (ABCC)-tool was developed to optimise chronic care. ⋯ Use of the ABCC-tool has a positive effect on perceived quality of care and patients' activation, which makes the tool ready for use in clinical practice. Healthcare providers (e.g. general practitioners and practice nurses) can use the tool to provide person-centred care.Trial registration number: ClinicalTrials.gov Registry (NCT04127383).

General practitioners (GPs) often struggle to distinguish functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) from organic disorders in children with chronic abdominal symptoms. A referral strategy guided by faecal calprotectin (FCal) testing may help. ⋯ While the FCal-strategy improved diagnosis according to GPs, they found the primary challenge to be managing children with FGID. Nevertheless, they found the FCal-strategy beneficial, likely due to its integration into reassurance strategies. Further research focusing on enhancing communication and interventions for paediatric FGID in primary care is warranted.

The management of the long-term sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection, known as post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), continues to challenge the medical community, largely owing to a significant gap in the understanding of its aetiology, diagnosis and effective treatment. ⋯ The findings confirm the high functional limitations and psychosocial burden of PCS on patients, and the central role of GPs in their care. The study suggests a need for further research and health policy measures to support GPs in navigating diagnostic uncertainty, interprofessional communication and the limited evidence on effective treatments.
