Granulocyte colony stimulating factor in chronic angina to stimulate neovascularisation: a placebo controlled crossover trial.
Experimental studies demonstrate that granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) promotes neovascularisation and confers cardioprotection. ⋯ In patients with chronic ischaemic heart disease, G-CSF mobilises EPCs but does not improve myocardial perfusion or angina. To assess the impact of triple marker testing on patient management and the diagnostic efficiencies of different biomarker strategies examined. ⋯ Measurement of cTnI alone is sufficient for diagnosis. Measurement of a marker panel does not facilitate diagnosis.

Effect of erythropoietin as an adjunct to primary percutaneous coronary intervention: a randomised controlled clinical trial.
The acute administration of high-dose erythropoietin (EPO) on reperfusing ischaemic myocardium has been reported to halve myocardial infarct (MI) size in preclinical studies, but its effect in ST elevation myocardial infarction patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) remains unknown. We investigated whether high-dose EPO administered as an adjunct to PPCI reduces MI size. ⋯ High-dose EPO administered as an adjunct to PPCI failed to reduce MI size. In fact, EPO treatment was associated with an increased incidence of microvascular obstruction, LV dilatation and increased LV mass. Neurocognitive outcome after coronary artery bypass surgery using minimal versus conventional extracorporeal circulation: a randomised controlled pilot study.
Neurocognitive impairment can be a debilitating complication after cardiac surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of minimal extracorporeal circulation (MECC) versus conventional extracorporeal circulation (CECC) on neurocognitive function after elective coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and whether this can be attributed to improved cerebral perfusion intraoperatively. ⋯ The study is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01213511.
