To evaluate the potential of [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) after the completion of neoadjuvant chemoradiation for the assessment of histopathologic response and prognosis in the multimodality treatment of patients with esophageal cancer. ⋯ FDG-PET seems not to be an imaging system that effectively characterizes the groups of major and minor response as well as survival in patients with esophageal cancer after multimodality treatment.

Adjuvant gemcitabine plus S-1 chemotherapy improves survival after aggressive surgical resection for advanced biliary carcinoma.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of adjuvant gemcitabine plus S-1 chemotherapy after aggressive surgical resection for advanced biliary carcinoma. ⋯ Adjuvant gemcitabine plus S-1 chemotherapy may be one of several factors contributing to improved outcomes after aggressive surgical resection of advanced biliary carcinoma in recent years.

Variability in length of stay after colorectal surgery: assessment of 182 hospitals in the national surgical quality improvement program.
Length of postoperative stay (LOS) has gained increasing attention as a potential indicator of surgical efficiency. Our objective was to examine the feasibility of assessing LOS at 182 hospitals to identify institutions with outlying performance. ⋯ ACS NSQIP data can provide individual hospitals with riskadjusted LOS measures that can be used to identify outlying performance and motivate quality improvement efforts.

Predicting outcome by growth rate of locally recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma: the one centimeter per month rule.
To identify the prognostic variables that predict disease-specific survival and second local recurrence-free survival in patients with recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma so as to guide clinical management. ⋯ Local recurrence growth rate is strongly associated with disease-specific survival and local control for patients with completely resected locally recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma. Despite aggressive operative management patients with a local recurrence growth rate greater than 0.9 cm/mo were associated with poor outcomes and should be considered for enrollment in clinical trials employing novel agents.

Modern war ballistics and blast injuries inflict devastating extremity injuries, violating soft tissue, bone, and neurovascular structures. Despite advances in complex wound management, appropriate timing of war wound closure remains subjective. In addition, the pathophysiology of acute wound failure is poorly defined. ⋯ The cytokine and chemokine protein and gene transcript expression patterns demonstrate a condition of inflammatory dysregulation associated with war wound failure. A molecular biomarker panel may predict combat wound healing outcome and warrants prospective validation.
