Ex vivo lung evaluation of prearrest heparinization in donation after cardiac death.
To evaluate the effects of prearrest heparin administration on lung quality in a model of donation after cardiac death (DCD), and to assess the potential application of ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) in the identification of better grafts from the DCD donor pool. ⋯ Prearrest heparin administration improved organ function by preserving endothelial homeostasis. EVLP proved to be a useful platform for assessing DCD lungs, providing reliable means of discriminating injured grafts.

Antibiotic choice is independently associated with risk of surgical site infection after colectomy: a population-based cohort study.
To determine which perioperative care practices are associated with decreased risk of surgical site infection (SSI) after colectomy surgery. ⋯ In Michigan, several perioperative care practices are independently associated with decreased risk of SSI after colectomy, including SCIP-2-compliant prophylactic antibiotics, postoperative normothermia, glucose control, and oral antibiotics. Furthermore, specific prophylactic antibiotic choices are associated with lower risk of SSI. These results account for patient factors and unmeasured hospital effects, suggesting that dissemination of these perioperative care practices may decrease SSI rates.

A randomized stepped care intervention trial targeting posttraumatic stress disorder for surgically hospitalized injury survivors.
To test the effectiveness of a stepped care intervention model targeting posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms after injury. ⋯ Stepped care interventions can reduce PTSD symptoms and improve functioning over the course of the year after surgical injury hospitalization. Orchestrated investigative and policy efforts could systematically introduce and evaluate screening and intervention procedures for PTSD at US trauma centers. (

Incidence of inguinal hernia repairs in Olmsted County, MN: a population-based study.
To determine age- and sex-specific incidence rates of inguinal hernia repairs (IHR) in a well-defined US population and examine trends over time. ⋯ IHR are common, their incidence varies greatly by age and sex and has decreased substantially over time in Olmsted County, MN.
