For treatment decisions and prognostic applications, we evaluated p53/epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) somatic aberrations in metachronous multiple lung cancers to differentiate multiple primary lung cancers (MPLCs) from pulmonary metastases. ⋯ Because most metachronous tumors of the same histologic type have different clonal origins, clonality assessment is essential to differentiate MPLCs from metastases. We recommend limited resection as the treatment of choice to achieve long-term survival in MPLCs patients with tumors of 3 cm or smaller.

To demonstrate the pro-osteogenic effect of burn injury on heterotopic bone formation using a novel burn ossicle in vivo model. ⋯ Burn injury increases the predilection to osteogenic differentiation of ectopically implanted ossicles. Early differences in vascularity correlated with later bone development. Understanding the role of burn injury on heterotopic bone formation is an important first step toward the development of treatment strategies aimed to prevent unwanted and detrimental heterotopic bone formation.

To determine whether administration of FK866, a competitive inhibitor of visfatin, attenuates acute lung injury induced by intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). ⋯ Collectively, these findings implicate FK866 as a novel therapeutic compound for intestinal I/R-induced attenuates acute lung injury via modulation of innate immune functions.
