We aimed to identify key principles of targeted therapy of protein kinases and their application to the management of solid tumors. ⋯ Kinase inhibitors induce response in diverse types of solid tumors. Although the agents are often effective in defined molecular subsets, cure is rare and resistance is common. This broad review provides rationale for further investigation of multimodality therapy combining kinase inhibitors with additional systemic and local therapies, including surgery.

The aim of this study was to examine risk of self-harm, hospitalization for depression and death by suicide after gastric bypass surgery (GBP). ⋯ The increased risk of post-surgery self-harm and hospitalization for depression is mainly attributable to patients who have a diagnosis of self-harm or depression before surgery. Raised awareness is needed to identify vulnerable patients with history of self-harm or depression, which may be in need of psychiatric support after GBP.

The aim of the study was to investigate the association between p53, SOX2, and CD44 protein expression and tumor response, and to validate potential predictive biomarker(s) in an independent cohort. ⋯ Pattern of p53 and particularly SOX2 protein expression in EAC predicts response to nCRT. These biomarkers may help to individualize treatment in EAC patients.

To evaluate the whole experience of liver transplantation (LT) with donors ≥70 years in a single center not applying specific donor/recipient matching criteria. ⋯ Even without specific donor/recipient matching criteria, the outcomes of LT with donors ≥70 and <70 years are comparable with appropriate donor management.

To investigate differences in the quality, confidence, and consistency of intraoperative surgical decision making (DM) and using functional neuroimaging expose decision systems that operators use. ⋯ Expert DM is characterized by improved quality, consistency, and confidence. The findings imply attendings use a habitual decision system, whereas novices use an effortful approach under uncertainty. In the presence of operative cues (primes), novices disengage the prefrontal cortex and seem to accept the observed operative decision as correct.
