To evaluate the correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) values, and the presence of invasive carcinoma in patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). ⋯ NLR is an independent predictive marker for the presence of IPMN-associated invasive carcinoma. Further prospective studies are needed to assess the predictive ability of NLR and how it can be applied in the clinical setting.

Minimally Invasive Versus Open Esophageal Resection: Three-year Follow-up of the Previously Reported Randomized Controlled Trial: the TIME Trial.
The aim of this study was to investigate 3-year survival following a randomized controlled trial comparing minimally invasive with open esophagectomy in patients with esophageal cancer. ⋯ The study presented here depicted no differences in disease-free and overall 3-year survival for open and MI esophagectomy. These results, together with short-term results, further support the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques in the treatment of esophageal cancer.

Mesorectal Excision With or Without Lateral Lymph Node Dissection for Clinical Stage II/III Lower Rectal Cancer (JCOG0212): A Multicenter, Randomized Controlled, Noninferiority Trial.
The aim of the study was to confirm the noninferiority of mesorectal excision (ME) alone to ME with lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) in terms of efficacy. ⋯ The noninferiority of ME alone to ME with LLND was not confirmed in the intent-to-treat analysis. ME with LLND had a lower local recurrence, especially in the lateral pelvis, compared to ME alone.

To analyze the outcome of hepatoblastoma (HB) patients presenting with post treatment extent of disease (POST-TEXT) stages III and IV after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. ⋯ Aggressive surgical resection is a successful approach in some patients with POST-TEXT III and IV HB who otherwise would be candidates for liver transplantation. These children should undergo central review and should be surgically managed at centers of excellence for pediatric liver surgery. Despite challenging surgical procedures and complex clinical courses, the patients benefit from avoidance of morbidities of organ transplant. However, preparation of backup liver transplantation should be considered in selected cases.

To investigate the potential additive effects of blood transfusion and sepsis on colon cancer disease-specific survival, cardiovascular disease-specific survival, and overall survival after colon cancer surgery. ⋯ Perioperative blood transfusions are associated with shorter survival, independent of sepsis, after colon cancer resection. However, receiving a transfusion and developing sepsis has an additive effect and is associated with even worse survival. Restrictive perioperative transfusion practices are a possible strategy to reduce sepsis rates and improve survival after colon cancer surgery.
